Research Interests
Dr. Reed's laboratory is dedicated to the application of molecular and cytogenetic approaches to the study of genomics and evolution and provides a wide range of research opportunities for students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Currently, Dr. Reed's primary research is the application of genomic resources for functional genomic investigations in the turkey. Current projects, funded by USDA, provide a comprehensive approach to investigation of muscle function and development as it relates to meat production.  The main objectives of this project are to identify differential expression of muscle genes at three developmental stages (18 day embryo, 1 day post-hatch poult, and 16 wk post-hatch turkey); to study the mechanisms of the identified candidate genes that regulate muscle characteristics during proliferation, differentiation and maturation; to segregate the turkeys based on their meat quality traits and identify differential expression of muscle genes between subgroups; and to genetically map select turkey skeletal muscle genes.  A second project is focused on the structure and evolution of the turkey MHC. The main objectives of this project are to sequence the turkey MHC B-locus; identify genomic haplotype markers (SNPs) for this region; and develop and trial assays for genetic testing of commercial and experimental populations.  A third project, also funded by USDA is a collaborative effort with Utah State University and involves the genetics of Aflatoxin susceptibility.  We are also examining changes in gene expression associated with cardiomyopathy (Round Heart Disease).  Other notable projects currently involve llama/alpaca geneics/genomics.
