Karl F. Meyer-James H. Steele Gold Head Cane Award: Will Hueston

Dr. William Hueston

Dr. Will Hueston, director of the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety, was presented with the Karl F. Meyer-James H. Steele Gold Head Cane Award at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) convention at the Minneapolis Convention Center on July 16, 2005.

The award was in recognition of Hueston’s achievements in the advancement of human health through veterinary epidemiology and public health. Created in 1964 by the American Veterinary Epidemiology Association, the award is sponsored by the Hartz Mountain Corporation.

Hueston has advised governments in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada on how to prevent and contain bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease. He leads a faculty team addressing surveillance, risk analysis, and policy issues related to food-borne illnesses and emerging infectious diseases.
