Postdoctoral Training Program in Comparative Medicine and Pathology

Research The College is accepting applications from veterinarians seeking state-of-the-art research training in a National Institutes of Health (NIH) postdoctoral training program in Comparative Medicine and Pathology. The goal of this program is to provide students with sufficient broad-based knowledge, quality communication skills, and advanced research training essential for a career as an independent investigator. The faculty mentors in the program represent a diverse group of disciplines, including pharmacology, cell biology, infectious disease, neurobiology, physiology, genetics, molecular biology, and morphology. Trainees without a Ph.D. degree will be strongly encouraged to pursue a Ph.D. in the Comparative and Molecular Biosciences graduate program. Additional information about this program may be found at http://www.cvm.umn.edu/researchandgradprog/gradprog/cmb/home.html.

Candidates must have a D.V.M. or equivalent foreign degree by the start date (senior veterinary students are eligible to apply), and must be a U.S. citizen or non-citizen national. The ideal applicant will have completed a residency program; however, recent graduates and individuals with veterinary practice experience are encouraged to apply. Selection criteria will include:

  • Academic credentials and performance during veterinary school and clinical training/residency (if applicable)
  • Strong interest in research and a desire for a career in academic veterinary medicine
  • Desirable personal characteristics, including integrity, perseverance, and communications skills

Salary is at NIH postdoctoral stipend levels. Tuition/fees, health insurance, travel stipend, and trainee-related expenses are included.

Applicants should send curriculum vitae, statement of career goals and interests, university-certified veterinary college transcript, and GRE scores (if available), and should request that letters of reference from three individuals who are knowledgeable about the applicant’s academic performance and suitability for the program be sent to Dr. Cathy Carlson, Department of Veterinary Population Medicine, University of Minnesota, 1988 Fitch Ave., St. Paul, MN  55108; Phone 612-625-7717; FAX 612-624-3934; e-mail carls099@umn.edu.

Application deadline: February 1, 2007 or until positions are filled. Date of notification: April 1, 2007. Desired start date: April 15, 2007, or later.
