Alan T. Waterman Award

The Alan T. Waterman Award is the highest honor awarded by the National Science Foundation. Since 1975, when Congress established the award to honor the foundation's first director, the annual award has been bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in scientific or engineering research of sufficient quality to place them at the forefront of their peers.

Purpose
The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding young researchers in any field of science or engineering supported by the foundation. The awardee receives a $500,000 nonrestrictive grant for continued research over a three-year period.

Eligibility
Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and 35 years old or younger or not more than seven years beyond receipt of the Ph.D. Criteria include originality, innovation, and significant impact on the field.

How to apply
Nominations may be made through the National Science Foundation's Fastlane Web page at https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/honawards/
