Prevention

Prevention of LPAI is based on prevention of exposure to influenza viruses by direct or indirect contact with waterfowl and shorebirds, live bird markets and swine farms through the use of sanitation, isolation and traffic control.  History has proven that prevention of HPAI is based on successful prevention and control of H5 or H7 LPAI.

Current USDA quarantine measures reduce the possibility of introducing highly pathogenic influenza through importation of poultry or exotic birds.  Smuggling is one way virus could enter this country.

A bird was recently smuggled into the United Kingdom and found to have H5N1 avian influenza

A falcon smuggled from China to Saudi Arabia also was found to be infected with H5N1
