Perlman Chair in Animal Oncology
Alvin and June Perlman are long-time clients of the Veterinary Medical Center at the University of Minnesota. To help ensure the continuation and expansion of the excellent treatment that their pets have received over the years, the Perlmans established this chair in 1999 through their own gifts and those of the Alvin S. and June Perlman Philanthropic Fund. The chair is intended to attract an outstanding animal oncologist to serve as the head of the Veterinary Cancer Center currently being established in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Chair Awarded to Jaime Modiano, V.M.D., Ph.D.
In July 2007, Dr. Jaime Modiano joined the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota, where he continues his research program as professor of comparative oncology holding the Al and June Perlman Endowed Oncology Chair. He is also the director of the university's Animal Cancer Care and Research program. Dr. Modiano says one of the greatest joys of having an endowed position is that it allows him the time and freedom to mentor "brilliant young people starting out their careers."
Dr. Modiano completed his veterinary training and Ph.D. in immunology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, followed by a residency in veterinary clinical pathology at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine in Denver. He was assistant professor of veterinary pathobiology at Texas A&M University between 1995 and 1999, and returned to Denver from 1999 to 2007, where he held scientist and senior scientist appointments at the AMC Cancer Research Center. Dr. Modiano was associate professor of immunology and a full member of the Cancer Center at the School of Medicine of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Between 2001 and 2003, Dr. Modiano served as director of cancer immunology and immunotherapy for the Donald Monk Cancer Research Foundation. He was also a partner at Veterinary Research Associates, LLP, a company focused on development and implementation of diagnostics for veterinary medicine, and a founder/scientist at ApopLogic Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a biotechnology company focused on development of cancer therapeutics.
