AI and FAD Risk Assessment to Support National Preparedness

The project works to support Veterinary Services - Center for Epidemiology and Animal Health (VS CEAH), National Center for Risk Analysis and Veterinary Services – National Center for Animal Health and Emergency Management (VS NCAHEM) in developing tools to support national HPAI preparedness planning. Specific support functions include development and initiatives of highly productive industry-government-academic work groups and providing technical information, expertise, and advice.

The development of product specific risk assessments in support of national HPAI response planning is performed regularly. In collaboration with industry and government, the goal is to determine the priorities for risk assessments in the following products:

  • Eggshells and inedible egg-finalize drafts and revisions
  • Manure
  • Pullets
  • Broiler type- Hatching eggs
  • Turkey type- Hatching eggs
  • An evaluation of industry’s need for and/or interest in live bird/ animal movement risk assessments, in particular for turkey industry.

Efforts of the research program work to convey and communicate risk assessment results to facilitate corresponding product specific movement and permit guidelines for different outbreak scenarios. This is done through the engagement of industry in the development of different protocols to assure risk management is in line with risk assessments developed in support of movement and permitting in different scenarios.

Another capacity performed is the training of government, industry and academic partners in APHIS risk assessment approaches supporting HPAI national response planning. This is done through sector risk assessment training to key industry, state and federal officials demonstrating the APHIS risk assessment approaches and various presentations about APHIS risk assessment approaches at regional / national work conferences, industry meetings and other food system related activities.

As a product of this work in collaboration with USDA AHPIS-VS, industry leaders, state and local government officials, and other academic institutions, CAHFS has developed a Secure Egg Supply Plan: SecureEggSupply.com
