Hueston Letter 09 2013

Keeping healthy in a rapidly changing world
Newsletter 2013 Issue 3, Letter from Will Hueston, Executive Director of GIFSL

People, animals and food can move around the world faster than ever before. Protecting people from animal diseases and food-borne illness in this ever changing global marketplace requires innovative international. 2013 is proving to be a record year for new educational partnerships that build capacity to keep people healthy. CAHFS is collaborating with Makerere University in Uganda on a One Health Residency program and with Chiang Mai University in Thailand on an international Master of Public Health and a Veterinary Public Health Residency program. We’ve also gotten support from the World Organization for Animal Health to ‘twin’ with Chiang Mai University to strengthen veterinary medical education in key areas such as epidemiology, public health and food safety. To help these programs get off to a strong start we’re sharing the lessons we’ve learned over the past decade:

• Think big and start small
• Make experiential learning a key component of educational programs
• Foster leadership skills and build personal and professional networks
• Use real world projects to help students learn while making a positive difference
• Learn how to catalyze collective action for the common good
