Partners and Partnership

P2 Pic is a new section of the One to One Newsletter, which will focus on partners and partnership. P2 will provide practical information on partnering and illuminate the elements involved in the shared success CAHFS has had with many superb partners since the Center’s inception in 2001.
To kick things off we will examine five elements of successful partnerships: shared vision, synergy, contribution, shared recognition and transparency.
Elements of successful partnerships

  • Shared Vision – a bit obvious, however, if all partners are not working toward the same goals, it can be hard, if not impossible to have achieve a successful and effective outcome
  • Synergy – 1 + 1 = 3, through the partnership each partner can accomplish more than they could on their own
  • Contribution – all partners contribute something, contributions do not need to be equal, but each partner should be contributing something of value, some refer this as “skin in the game”
  • Shared Recognition – its easy to share recognition when things go well, good partners also share responsibility when things don’t go as hoped
  • Transparency – partners are open about their motivations, a good partner would not intentionally mislead their partner if they hoped to see outcomes other than that of the shared goal

Strong partnerships require strong foundations. Incorporating these elements of successful partnerships in conversations between partners and within each partner organization are good building blocks en route to successful and effective partnerships.

It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed. —Charles Darwin
