Faculty, staff, and students give toys, food, hats, mittens, and more CVM faculty, staff, and students from around the College made generous donations to the College's hat and mitten tree, Second Harvest Heartland, and Toys for Tots during the holiday season.
"We had 10 large garbage bags full of Toys for Tots donations," says Cindy Irons, executive assistant to the dean, who coordinated the effort. "I couldn't have fit any more into my vehicle if I had tried. . . I had trouble looking out my windows!" Located outside the dean's office on the fourth floor of the Veterinary Medical Center, the annual hat-and-mitten tree (left) was decked out with colorful winter hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves, which were donated to Listening House homeless shelter in downtown St. Paul.
CVM receives 1,051 applications from aspiring DVMs The College's admissions committee received 1,051 applications for the 100 seats in the fall 2011 class. Interviews of Minnesota resident applicants will take place on January 27, February 3, and February 10. Interviews of non-resident applicants will take place on the weekends of January 28-29, February 4-5, and February 11-12. Xcel Energy Foundation awards grant to The Raptor Center The Xcel Energy Foundation awarded The Raptor Center a $5,000 grant for environmental outreach on December 16. Dean invites CVM to celebrate summer in January Dean Trevor Ames invites CVM faculty, staff, and students to a New Year's Appreciation Ice Cream Social as a thank-you for their hard work and dedication over the past year. The celebration is scheduled for Thursday, January 6, at 12:30 p.m. in the Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine lobby. Contributions of cookies and bars are welcome. Reminder: Academic employees have floating holiday A personal holiday has been added for academic employees on the Twin Cities and Rochester campuses to bring their total up to 11 holidays, consistent with other employee groups and other campuses. The personal holiday for academic staff (on the Twin Cities and Rochester campuses only) for fiscal year 2011 must be taken between December 23, 2010, and January 17, 2011. If not used in that time period, it is lost. This holiday cannot be banked or used outside of this time period. The specific dates will change in future years consistent with the academic calendar. This personal holiday applies to those whose terms and conditions of employment are covered by academic, graduate assistant, or professionals-in-training policies. Approval and tracking of this holiday is the responsibility of the local unit. Seminar to focus on Photoshop in scientific researchThe Association of Multicultural Scientists will host a seminar on Photoshop in Scientific Research on January 19 from 4-5 p.m. in 2-650 Moos Tower. Speaker Jerry Sedgewick will discuss methods for using Photoshop for acquiring, archiving, and presenting visual data. Snowball set for January 22 Snowball, the annual winter formal hosted by the Student Council, Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association, and VCA, is set for Saturday, January 22, from 7 p.m.-midnight at the University Club in downtown St. Paul. The event is open to all CVM students, faculty, staff, and guests. Tickets are $10 and will be on sale January 10-19 from noon-12:50 p.m. in the Hayloft Cafe (Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center). Registration open for Engaging Intergovernmental Organizations program Want to increase your international network and strengthen your capacity to engage intergovernmental organizations like the World Organization for Animal Health, World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, and Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations? Engaging Intergovernmental Organizations is a week-long intensive professional development program hosted by the Global Initiative for Food Systems Leadership. The program is designed to help mid- and senior level government officials, industry leaders, and academic faculty interact more effectively with intergovernmental organizations. Participants gain invaluable networking opportunities as they explore of the roles and responsibilities of the four key intergovernmental organizations involved with animal health, public health, and food security. In memory: Dr. Richard Sielicki Dr. Richard Sielicki, class of 1986, died on December 2 at age 49. Richard was a practicing partner at Crawford Animal Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which is planning to have a memorial gathering this month. He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Mary Sielicki of Wisconsin Dells; a brother; and other family members and friends. Lisa Borgia successfully defends Ph.D. thesis Lisa Borgia, a student in the veterinary medicine graduate program, has successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis, "Resistance Training and the Effect of Feeding Carbohydrates and Oils on Horses with Polysaccharides Storage Myopathy." Lisa was advised by Dr. Stephanie Valberg. Abirami Kugadas successfully defends M.S. thesis Abirami Kugadas, a student in the veterinary medicine graduate program, has successfully defended her M.S. thesis, "A Serine Protease of Mycobacterium avium Paratuberculosis is Involved in Resistance to Phagosomal Acid Stress." Abirami was advised by Dr. Srinand Sreevatsan. She is beginning her Ph.D. program in immunology and infectious diseases at Washington State University.
