VPM Faculty Ames TrevorDean Ames reappointed

In a January 11 e-mail to CVM faculty and staff, E. Thomas Sullivan, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, announced that Dean Trevor Ames had been reappointed to another term. "We recently performed a comprehensive review of Dean Trevor Ames, which affords us a very thorough analysis of his performance over the past three years as Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine," Sullivan wrote. "I want to share with you that the review process is now completed. I have carefully reviewed the committee’s findings and recommendations with Dean Ames. I am happy to report that he has been reappointed for another term."

Student leadership conference is Saturday

The College of Veterinary Medicine and School of Dentistry are co-hosting a student leadership conference at Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center on Saturday, January 21, from 9 a.m.-1:15 p.m. As in past years, students from both schools will have an opportunity to discuss leadership topics with alumni from both professions. This year's focus is "neuroleadership and change," and the keynote speaker is Mel Mitchell, director of organizational effectiveness at the University of Minnesota.

"This interactive event will involve a participant self-assessment of how various domains impact their reaction to change as well as case studies of change in private practice and in school," says Laura Molgaard, associate dean for academic and student affairs. There is no charge, but registration is required; go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/CVMSDOLeadershipConference. For more information, contact Amanda Anderson at andersoa@umn.edu.

New CVM videos feature large animal educational experience

Two new College of Veterinary Medicine videos, "Educational Experiences in Dairy and Beef" and "Educational Experiences in Swine, Small Ruminants, and Poultry," made their debut on YouTube this month. Narrated by Dr. Laura Molgaard, associate dean for academic and student affairs, the videos include interviews with Drs. John Fetrow, Tim Goldsmith, Ann Goplen, Luis Mendonca, Montserrat Torremorell, Cindy Wolf, and Andre Ziegler; students Alaina Andersen, Mike Lilla, and Kelsey Ness; and visits to the Dairy Education Center and Swine Research Center. See the videos on YouTube at—

One Health updates planned

A One Health research update is scheduled for Friday, January 20, from 1-2 p.m. in 202 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. The featured project will be the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded RESPOND project. Dr. Katey Pelican will discuss the maintenance of cross-border partnerships, focusing on two University networks as a case example. More One Health updates are planned for February 17, March 30, and April 20.

Veterinary schools compete in food drive

The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine is competing with other veterinary schools in the Midwest to see which school can collect the most food to donate to local food shelves during the month of January. The winning school will be announced at the 2012 SAVMA (Student American Veterinary Medical Association) Symposium at Purdue University March 15-17.

The CVM will be donating to Second Harvest Heartland. Collection bins can be found in the lobbies of Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine, Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center, and the Veterinary Medical Center.

Snowball set for Saturday

The College's annual Snowball will be held at the University Club of St. Paul on Saturday from 7 p.m. to midnight. CVM students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend this formal event; tickets are $10 and will be sold in the Hayloft Cafe in the Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center from noon-12:50 p.m. through Wednesday.

Library offers free workshops

The Bio-Medical Library offers free workshops on a variety of library resources and research techniques. The workshops are open to all University students, staff, and faculty. Sessions are designed to help you enhance your skills searching databases and other library resources, organizing and managing your research, and publishing in the health sciences. Learn more and register at www.lib.umn.edu/services/workshops/biomed.

Faculty and staff news (top

Leslie Sharkey elected president of ASVCP

Dr. Leslie Sharkey, associate professor, Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department, has been elected president of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP), a scientific organization dedicated to scientific advancement, education, and standards in veterinary clinical pathology and diagnostics.

Scientists publish article in Journal of Bacteriology

"Genome Sequences and Phylogenetic Analysis of K88- and F18-Positive Porcine Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli," by Sara M. Shepard, Jessica L. Danzeisen, Richard E. Isaacson, Torsten Seemann, Mark Achtman, and Timothy J. Johnson was published in the January 2012 issue of Journal of Bacteriology. The authors were an international group: Sara Shepard (an M.S./D.V.M. student), Jessica Danzeisen, Richard Isaacson, and Tim Johnson are with the University of Minnesota; Torsten Seeman is with Monash University in Australia; and Mark Achtman is with University College Cork in Cork, Ireland.

The study generated the first completed sequences of porcine enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) isolated from post-weaning diarrhea. The isolates were obtained from outbreaks of post-weaning diarrhea occurring on pig farms in the Midwest. The authors demonstrated that most porcine ETEC strains appear to have emerged from a limited subset of E. coli lineages that either have an increased propensity to carry plasmid-encoded virulence factors or have the appropriate ETEC core genome required for virulence. This work forms the basis for the identification of novel porcine ETEC virulence factors and antigenic candidates that could be used for the development of a broadly protective vaccine against these pathogens in swine. The full text of the article is online at http://jb.asm.org/content/194/2/395.full.

Tina Clarkson chosen to participate in Internationalizing Teaching and Learning Program

Dr. Tina Clarkson, assistant professor, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department, is one of 13 faculty from around the U who have been chosen to participate in the 2012 Internationalizing Teaching and Learning (ITL) Cohort Program. The ITL program is a systemwide initiative to engage faculty in significant course design or redesign by participating in a multidisciplinary cohort of their peers. They will identify global learning outcomes for their courses, expand their teaching strategies, and develop course materials, activities, and assessments.

Dr. John Ohlfest, associate professor of neurosurgery, who works with the CVM's Dr. Liz Pluhar on brain cancer research, presented "Treating Man—and His Best Friend" at the College of Continuing Education's "Headliners, January Edition," event on January 5. Margaret Ligon, director of CCE's personal enrichment programs, reports that 315 people attended the program and one asked how to make a donation to support the research. In an e-mail to Bill Venne, chief development officer, Margaret wrote that "John knocked it out of the park, just as you promised he would. The year's off to a good start, thanks to you." She also shared some comments about John from participants:
  • "A winning combination of head and heart—scary smart yet truly compassionate."
  • "This speaker was beyond excellent."
  • "Last night was superb. I hope we can keep that young man at the U. What a star, and a hero!"
