MVMA names Carl Jessen Veterinarian of the Year; Stephanie Valberg receives Outstanding Faculty Award

Dr. Carl Jessen, retired professor and current treasurer of the Minnesota Veterinary Historical Museum, received the Veterinarian of the Year Award and Dr. Stephanie Valberg, professor and director of the University of Minnesota Equine Center, was honored with the Outstanding Faculty Award at the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association Conference on February 8.

Will Hueston awarded honorary doctorate from Chiang Mai University

Dr. Will Hueston, executive director of the Global Initiative for Food Systems Leadership and Endowed Chair in Global Food Systems Leadership in the College of Veterinary Medicine and School of Public Health, was awarded an honorary doctorate in veterinary medicine from Chiang Mai University in Thailand on January 24. The degree was presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Learn more

U Cards to be required for access to VDL

The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is undergoing a security upgrade that will affect access for all CVM faculty, staff, and students: By early March, U Cards will be needed to get into the VDL. The card readers will all be proximity readers, which means you may need to get a new U Card if yours was issued before 2008. Learn more

Case of the Month features Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service

The Veterinary Medical Center's February Case of the Month features two cases from the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service—the case of a fox terrier and the case of a mixed breed dog, both of which required surgical extraction of teeth. Case of the Month is posted on the Web, and a link is e-mailed to referring veterinarians.  See past Cases of the Month.

Opportunities

  • Food Policy Research Center seeks proposals for Issue Briefings. The Food Policy Research Center (FPRC), a joint effort of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences; College of Veterinary Medicine; Humphrey School of Public Affairs; Minnesota Extension Service; School of Public Health; and 20 participating centers and institutes, is now accepting proposals for Issue Briefings on a rolling basis. Up to $5,000 each will be awarded for the completion of the two-page issue briefing, which provides concise and timely information on food and nutrition issues to legislators, congressional staffers, committee members, and other stakeholders. Potential topics range from backyard poultry to animal welfare; the FPRC is open to suggestions. Download Request for Proposals: Issue Briefings.
  • UMASH requests grant proposals. The Upper Midwest Agriculture Safety and Health Center (UMASH) is requesting proposals for small grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 to address health and safety issues related to agricultural workers and their families. These grants are intended specifically to follow up on consensus ideas developed through the Finding Common Ground Forum: Improving Animal and Worker Health and Welfare, which was hosted by UMASH, the Center for Integrative Leadership, and the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety in January. Proposals are due March 8. For more information, visit http://umash.umn.edu/projects/pilot_projects_rfp.html.
  • Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives Institute offers funding opportunities. Letters of interest and proposals are invited for a planning grant, university research grant, and graduate and professional student research grant. Get more details.

Giving back

  • Blood drive draws 51 donors. Twenty-four first-time donors were among those who donated 51 units of blood at the College of Veterinary Medicine blood drive on February 1. Because blood contains three components—plasma, platelets, and red blood cells—the 51 units can be used to save up to 153 lives. Andy Kryzer, a second-year DVM student, and Bridget Monson, director of customer service, coordinated the drive, which was conducted by Memorial Blood Centers.
  • PUB/CVM/CooksForKidsCVM volunteers participate in Cooks for Kids event. The CVM Volunteer Committee thanks the 12 volunteers — Meggan Craft, Becky and Peter Davies, Catherine Hageman, Marcia Kocourek, Casey Madill, Matthew Madill, Erin Malone, Bridget and Tyler Monson, Davis Seelig, and Scott Wood — who helped set up, prepare, serve, and clean up for 50 people at the Ronald McDonald House on January 27. The group prepared beef stroganoff, chicken nuggets, salad, corn, garlic bread, and assorted desserts. "The families were so appreciative and enjoyed the evening dining with one another," says Bridget Monson, who helped organize the event. A total of 30 hours were donated.
