Today's new employee orientation canceled The new employee orientation previously scheduled for Monday, February 13, has been canceled. The weekly orientation sessions will resume Monday, February 20, from 8:30 a.m.-noon in 458 Veterinary Medical Center. College well-represented at MVMA, MAVT meetings; Sandra Godden receives Outstanding Faculty Award The College was well-represented at the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) and Minnesota Association of Veterinary Technicians (MAVT) meetings at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis February 2-4. In addition to a variety of presentations by faculty members and staff; College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Medical Center, and Minnesota Veterinary Historical Museum booths staffed by faculty experts and staff; and attendance at committee meetings and the business luncheon, the College hosted an alumni reception on Thursday evening with the Alumni and Friends Society. Other highlights included: - Dr. Sandra Godden received the Outstanding Faculty Award, which is presented to a University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine faculty member who has provided outstanding service to Minnesota veterinarians, given their time and talent to the veterinary profession, and been dedicated contributors to organized veterinary medicine.
- Seven CVM students were awarded scholarships (see Student News).
- Dr. John Howe, class of 1977, was named Veterinarian of the Year.
- Dr. Bill Hartmann, class of 1978, received the President's Award.
- Buster, a 9-year-old boxer who was treated at the Veterinary Medical Center after being stabbed by a burglar in his St. Paul home, received the Hero Animal Hall of Fame Award.
Electron microscopy lab passes prestigious quality assurance test The electron microscopy (EM) section of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) has passed a prestigious EM virus identification proficiency test. The test panel was provided, under Quality Assurance Scheme in EM Virus Diagnostics, by the Center for Biological Security 4 (ZBS 4), Robert Koch Institute, Berlin, Germany. Part of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Robert Koch Institute is the German federal institution responsible for disease control and prevention. A total of 103 international laboratories in 29 countries participated in the test. The results submitted by the VDL's electron microscopy lab were 100 percent accurate, which puts it in a class with national and international reference electron microscopy labs. Congratulations to the electron microscopy team, Anibal Armien, Don Ariyakumar, Dean Muldoon, and Jan Shivers. The Raptor Center admitted 699 birds in 2011 The Raptor Center reports that it admitted 699 birds of prey in 2011. The top five species were bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, Cooper’s hawks, great horned owls, and barred owls. The year also brought something new and something old. The “new” was the number of snowy owl admissions: Because of a recent irruption of "snowies," TRC treated 10 of the large white owls last year, when they usually see no more than three. The "something old” was the number of bald eagles treated for lead poisoning during the early to mid-winter. Of the 21 bald eagles admitted from October 24 through December 31, 14 (66.7 percent) suffered from the toxic effects of lead. International Research Conference is Friday The International Research Conference, "Addressing Global Challenges through International Research," will be held Friday, February 17, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at Coffman Union. The conference will feature presentations by more than 90 U faculty, researchers, and graduate students, as well as panel discussions on global policies, ethics, and partnerships. David Stonner, deputy director at the National Science Foundation Office of International Science and Engineering, will give the keynote address. CVM presenters include Drs. Katey Pelican, John Deen, and Meggan Craft; D.V.M./Ph.D. candidate Jonathan Clayton will present a poster. The conference is free and open to the U community, with lunch provided. For more information, see international research. Faculty meeting set for March 6 A CVM faculty meeting is planned for Tuesday, March 6, from 7:30-9:00 a.m. in 215 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. Academic technology showcase invites presentations An academic technology showcase themed "Innovation in Teaching, Learning, and Research" invites presentations demonstrating how members of the U community are using technology to drive innovative teaching, learning, and research. The showcase will be similar to an open house poster session, and presenters may use posters, computer displays, or other technology. Applications are due by midnight, February 24. The event takes place April 4, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., Coffman Union. For more information and to apply, see technology showcase. Proposals sought for IonE mini grants Proposals for the spring "Mini Grants" competition sponsored by the Institute on the Environment are due by March 9. IonE Mini Grants are intended to help spur new collaborative efforts by providing small amounts of funding (from $500 to $3,000, with average grants being $1,500), administrative support (including organizing and staffing meetings), and space (for meetings, small conferences, new courses, reading groups, etc.) to interdisciplinary groups of faculty, staff, and students from across the U system. The grants are meant to encourage collaboration across disciplines, units, and campuses. For more information, see Mini Grants. Public Health Institute set for May 21-June 8 On May 21-June 8, the 11th annual Public Health Institute will offer fast-paced and interactive courses in nine public health areas with an emphasis on theory-to-practice, with opportunities for field trips, case studies, hands-on labs, and simulations. Courses include Culturally Responsive Public Health Practice; Environmental Health Sciences; Food Protection, Global Health, Infectious Disease Epidemiology; Public Health Leadership and Management; Public Health Preparedness, Response, and Recovery; Research Methods; and more. Graduate credit or noncredit continuing education hours are available. For course descriptions and more information, see Public Health Institute. Library now offers DynaMed The Health Sciences Libraries has added DynaMed to its clinical care tools. An evidence-based clinical reference tool intended for physicians and other health-care professionals, DynaMed contains more than 3,200 topic summaries across all disciplines. It is updated daily based on surveillance of over 500 journals and critical appraisal of the best articles. DynaMed is available to University of Minnesota students, faculty, and staff; there is a mobile app available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Palm. The app does not require Internet. Request a serial number by e-mailing medref@umn.edu. There are installation instructions for iOS, Android. Blackberry, and Palm/Windows (PC/MAC).
