College well-represented at MVMA and MAVT meetingsThe College was well-represented at the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) and Minnesota Association of Veterinary Technicians (MAVT) meetings at the Hilton Minneapolis February 10-12. In addition to veterinary practice, small animal, equine, bovine, and other presentations by faculty members and staff; College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Medical Center, and Minnesota Veterinary Historical Museum booths staffed by faculty experts and staff; and attendance at the luncheons and business meeting, the College hosted an alumni reception on Thursday evening with the Alumni and Friends Society. On Friday, the annual MVMA awards were presented. Dale Sorensen honored with Veterinarian of the Year AwardDr. Dale Sorensen, professor emeritus and a former acting dean of the College, was the recipient of the Veterinarian of the Year Award, which is given to an MVMA member who has given much to the veterinary profession as well as to their community – a well-rounded member who is outstanding in the veterinary profession. President's Award presented to Bob Hardy
MVMA President Dr. Mike McMenomy presented the President's Award to Dr. Bob Hardy, a longtime professor in the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department who is retiring this year. The recipient of the President's Award is chosen by the current MVMA president, who chooses an individual that he feels has contributed significantly to the veterinary profession and MVMA, and has promoted the human-animal bond, animal health and welfare, or public health. Sheila Torres receives Outstanding Faculty Award
Dr. Sheila Torres, associate professor in the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department, received the Outstanding Faculty Award, an award given to a University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine faculty member who has provided outstanding service to Minnesota veterinarians; who give of their time and talent to the veterinary profession, and are dedicated contributors to organized veterinary medicine. Senator Steve Dille recognized with Veterinary Service AwardMinnesota Senator Steve Dille, a CVM alumnus, received the Veterinary Service Award, which is given to individuals who have promoted the veterinary profession and the well-being of animals. Major honored with Minnesota Animal Hall of Fame Award
Major, the seven-year member of the Roseville Police Department’s K9 Unit who was critically wounded while on duty in November, received the MVMA's Minnesota Animal Hall of Fame Award on Saturday, when he was named Hero Animal of the Year. Major underwent emergency surgery and intensive treatment and rehabilitation at the Veterinary Medical Center, but lost the use of his hind legs. The award honors outstanding contributions that animal companions make to enrich human lives and heighten public awareness of the human-animal bond. Morris Animal Foundation funds equine research effortsMorris Animal Foundation has awarded funding to two College of Veterinary Medicine researchers for equine health studies. Dr. Krista Fritz, post-doctoral fellow in the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department, was awarded a fellowship training grant for the study “Identifying Susceptibility of ‘Tying Up’ in Thoroughbreds,” and Dr. Molly McCue, assistant professor, Veterinary Population Medicine Department, received a grant for the study “Studying Susceptibility of Gray Horses to Skin Cancer.” Learn more Su pport an Owl for Valentine's Day The Raptor Center is asking people to have a heart and join the Support-an-Owl program for Valentine's Day. For $50, participants receive a barn owl plush, Valentine's Day candy, a personalized certificate of support, and a fact sheet about barn owls—and support the care and rehabilitation of injured owls at The Raptor Center. For more information and to support an owl, visit www.regonline.com/builder/site/Default.aspx?EventID=926750. A thank-you from Listening House of St. PaulListening House of St. Paul, a homeless shelter and community resource, recently sent a thank-you note to Paula Buchner, chief operating officer/chief financial officer, to thank CVM faculty, staff, and students for their donation of hats, mittens, and scarves over the holiday season. "Your gift does make a difference for the lives of our guests," wrote Mary, a volunteer. "We appreciate your partnership in this ministry of love." Minnesota bill increases penalties for harming police dogsHarming or killing a law enforcement dog could come with stiffer penalties under legislation making its way through the Minnesota Legislature. On February 8, lawmakers took a closer look at a bill that would increase potential restitution costs for people who hurt dogs used in police actions, search and rescue, correctional facilities, or arson investigations. Under the bill, killing or causing great bodily harm to such a dog could result in prison time, a fine of up to $5,000, and restitution costs of up to $25,000. Current penalties in state law don't require restitution. The law was inspired by a November incident in which Major, a seven-year member of the Roseville Police Department’s K9 Unit, was critically wounded while on duty. Major underwent emergency surgery and intensive treatment and rehabilitation at the Veterinary Medical Center, but lost the use of his hind legs. VMC blood drive planned for March 4A VMC/Memorial Blood Centers blood drive is scheduled for Friday, March 4, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Animal Science/Veterinary Medical Center lobby. To sign up, go to mbc.org/searchdrives and enter sponsor code 3554. Questions? Contact Brian at bgoogins@mbc.org or 651-332-7162. Alumni, faculty sought to make presentations at April pre-veterinary conferenceAlumni and faculty are sought to assist with the first University of Minnesota pre-veterinary conference to be held on April 15-16 in St. Paul. The conference will offer pre-veterinary students the opportunity to participate in tours and attend lectures and demonstrations on a variety of topics. The students are looking for alumni and professionals to assist on the morning of Saturday, April 16, with providing hands-on demonstrations and presentations on animal health, animal care, and veterinary-related topics. Alumni news— J ill Johnson retires after 34 years at LSU Dr. Jill Johnson, who received her B.S., D.V.M., and M.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1970, 1972, and 1977, respectively, retired from Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Veterinary Medicine on January 2 after 34 years with the school. She joined the faculty on April 1, 1977, and played a role in training every graduate of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, which graduated its first class in May 1977. A diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (internal medicine) and the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (equine practice), Jill was the first board-certified internist in Louisiana and the first woman veterinarian to achieve the rank of full professor at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. She was a pioneer in equine immunology; her lab first described donkey-factor, a blood antigen of donkeys, which is the reason that mule foals were dying from immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. She computerized the equine veterinary medical record systems and used Geographic Information Systems for studying diseases and exercise patterns in thoroughbred training programs. She is also an avid adventurer, scuba diver, skydiver, sailor, rock climber, swing dancer, and horseback rider.
