What’s killing Minnesota’s moose? College of Veterinary Medicine faculty, students, and alumni are working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to find out Minnesota's moose population has dropped by 52 percent since 2010, and no one knows why. But the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is working with collaborators at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine to find out, launching an investigation into the species' decline. Learn more U Cards to be required for access to VDL A friendly reminder that the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is undergoing a security upgrade that will affect access for all CVM faculty, staff, and students: By early March, U Cards will be needed to get into the VDL. The card readers will all be proximity readers, which means you may need to get a new U Card if yours was issued before 2008. Learn more 2012 Highlights now onlineThe College of Veterinary Medicine's 2012 Highlights, which was distributed at the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association annual meeting, is now online. Opportunities - Issue Briefings. The Food Policy Research Center (FPRC), a joint effort of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences; College of Veterinary Medicine; Humphrey School of Public Affairs; Minnesota Extension Service; School of Public Health; and 20 participating centers and institutes, is accepting proposals for Issue Briefings on a rolling basis. Up to $5,000 each will be awarded for the completion of the two-page issue briefing, which provides concise and timely information on food and nutrition issues to legislators, congressional staffers, committee members, and other stakeholders. Potential topics range from backyard poultry to animal welfare; the FPRC is open to suggestions. Download Request for Proposals: Issue Briefings.
- UMASH grants. The Upper Midwest Agriculture Safety and Health Center (UMASH) is requesting proposals for small grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 to address health and safety issues related to agricultural workers and their families. These grants are intended specifically to follow up on consensus ideas developed through the Finding Common Ground Forum: Improving Animal and Worker Health and Welfare, which was hosted by UMASH, the Center for Integrative Leadership, and the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety in January. Proposals are due March 8. For more information, visit http://umash.umn.edu/projects/pilot_projects_rfp.html.
- Spring Mini Grants. Proposals for the Spring Mini Grants sponsored by the Institute on the Environment (IonE) are due March 15. IonE Mini Grants seek to spur new collaborations across disciplines, units, and campuses by providing small amounts of funding ($500-$3,000), administrative support (including organizing and staffing meetings), and space (for meetings, small conferences, new courses, reading groups, etc.). For more information, see Mini Grants.
- President's Award for Outstanding Service. Nominations for the President's Award for Outstanding Service are due by March 15. The award honors active or retired faculty or staff who have gone well beyond their regular duties and have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the U community. For more information about the award and the nominating process, see President's Award.
- Regent's Professorship. Nominations for the Regent's Professorship are due March 21. The Regents Professorship is the highest honor the University of Minnesota bestows on its faculty, recognizing those who have made unique contributions to the quality of the U of M through exceptional accomplishments in teaching, research, and scholarship or creative work, and contributions to the public good. To view nomination procedures, criteria, and a list of current and emeriti Regents Professors, see Regents Professorship.
