VDL receives BSL-3 certificate of use
The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) has received the University of Minnesota Certificate of Use for the BSL-3 Necropsy Lab. The lab is now fully operational, having passed a rigorous series of training, safety, and equipment inspections and SOP approval by the U of M BSL-3 Advisory Committee. The BSL-3 Lab will typically function as an extension of the BSL-2 Necropsy Lab until BSL-3 suspect specimens are submitted, at which time it will be quickly converted to BSL-3 high-containment use. With the certification of the lab, the VDL is now prepared to serve a key role in surveillance for high-consequence foreign animal diseases. For more information about the use of the BSL-3 Lab, contact Ron Joki at 5-0255 or jokix001@umn.edu. Inventors honored Eight CVM researchers were recognized on February 10, when the Office of the Vice President for Research hosted a "University Innovations" event at McNamara Alumni Center. The ceremony recognized a total of 161 inventors, representing 10 colleges, whose efforts generated 106 patents and 84 licenses in fiscal years 2009–10. The College's inventors included: - James Collins, professor, and director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory
- Marie Gramer, associate clinical professor
- Vivek Kapur, adjunct professor
- Ling-Ling Li, scientist
- Nubia Macedo, research assistant
- Michael Murtaugh, professor
- Simone Oliveira, assistant clinical professor
- Yue Wang, research associate
The event also addressed the importance of research and innovation to the nation’s economy, the U's role in Minnesota’s economy, and the growth of U research. Over the past five years, inventions by University researchers have brought nearly $390 million in revenue into the state and helped fund numerous initiatives across the University, including fellowships for graduate students, critical research infrastructure and major equipment needs, development investments for University technologies, and funding for additional research. New Raptor Center Web site goes live The Raptor Center now has a newly designed Web site and home-page slide show, thanks to months of effort by The Raptor Center staff, webmaster/graphic designer Nathan Pasch, TRC pagemaster Amber Burnette, and CVM Communications. Check it out at www.cvm.umn.edu/raptor/. Have you seen the CVM's Academic Moment video?Have you seen the College of Veterinary Medicine's Academic Moment? The 42-second video, which debuted at TCF Bank Stadium during a Gophers Football game last year, includes engaging photos of Drs. Jody Lulich, Lisa Powell, Sheila Torres, Sarah Wefel, and other faculty and staff with patients. Check it out at www.youtube.com/watch?v=blYRVFsJB04. Donations of vacation time could help VMC employeeJoAnn Anderson, transcriptionist for Medical Imaging and long-term VMC employee, is facing serious medical issues that will require extended treatment and recovery time. She has not been able to return to work since before December and is participating in the vacation donation program. If you are interested in donating a portion of your vacation accrual, please fill out a Vacation Donation Contribution form and return it to Rod DeVriendt in 418 VMC. Society for Imaging Informatics meeting set for June 2-5 The annual meeting of the Society for Imaging Informatics is scheduled for June 2-5 in Washington, D.C. For more information and to register, go to www.siim2011.org/index.html. Learning Track 7: Imaging in the Sub-Specialties, will focus on veterinary medicine. For details, visit www.siim2011.org/imaging_subspecialties.html. In the news (top) High Plains Midwest Ag Journal quotes Randall Singer "Proper Antibiotic Use in Pork Production Improves Herd Health," an article in High Plains Midwest Ag Journal, quoted Dr. Randall Singer, associate professor in the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department. Randy said that a total ban on antibiotics would not be beneficial for the U.S. pork industry; many antibiotics are naturally produced by bacteria or fungi that help kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms. The story is online at http://www.hpj.com/archives/2011/feb11/feb14/0208PorkAntibioticsw2speake.cfm?title=Proper %20antibiotic%20use%20in%20pork%20production%20improves%20herd%20health. The Horse promotes study by equine genetics research group On February 25, The Horse announced that the CVM's equine genetics research group is collaborating with faculty members at Michigan State University and the University of Tennessee to investigate the occurrence and genetics of equine metabolic syndrome. The article is online at www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=17834. Danielson, Ph.D., Tsui-Feng Wu, Ph.D., Laura K. Molgaard, D.V.M., and Vanessa A. Preast, D.V.M., was published in the February 15 issue of Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA). Laura K. Needs a home (top) Luna, a 10-year-old spayed female cat Luna is a 10-year-old domestic shorthair female cat in excellent health. Rather small with beautiful swirly tabby markings, Luna is fastidiously clean, spayed, not declawed, and used to having her nails clipped. Luna has had the same owner since she was rescued as a tiny kitten, and her owner believes she would be happier in quiet, stable home without small children, where she would be the only animal.
