CVMFPRC2 – Image – 180x222 – Will HuestonAAVMC honors Will Hueston with Melcher Leadership Award

The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) has awarded the 2013 AAVMC Senator John Melcher DVM Leadership in Public Policy Award to Dr. Will Hueston, executive director of the Global Initiative for Food Systems Leadership and Endowed Chair in Global Food Systems Leadership in the College of Veterinary Medicine and School of Public Health. The award was presented March 8 at the AAVMC's 2013 Annual Conference in Alexandria, Virginia.

Hueston is modest about the honor.

"Actually, all the recognition should go to the wonderful team we have here at the College of Veterinary Medicine and School of Public Health," he said. "It takes a village!"

College hosts first interdepartmental clinical rounds

The College of Veterinary Medicine introduced an interdepartmental, interdisciplinary clinical rounds format on March 7. Open to all veterinary students, faculty, and staff, the session was designed to help students see how their classroom learning is applicable to real-life veterinary medicine. Dr. Kelly Hall of the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department was the lead presenter, with supporting roles played by Dr. Jim Mickelson of the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department and Dr. Christine Watson of the Veterinary Population Medicine Department, who is a second-year anatomical pathology resident in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

U Cards to be required for access to VDL

The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is undergoing a security upgrade that will affect access for all CVM faculty, staff, and students: Starting March 15, U Cards will be needed to get into the VDL. The card readers will all be proximity readers, which means you may need to get a new U Card if yours was issued before 2008. Learn more

Research Day awards nominations needed by March 15

Nominations are sought by Friday, March 15, for the Distinguished Research Alumnus Award, Distinguished Research Partner Award, and Pfizer Animal Health Award for Research Excellence, to be presented at the annual Points of Pride Research Day event on September 25. Learn more

Caffeinated Conversations on Research will include update on Stem Cell Institute

Dr. Jakub Tolar, associate professor and director of the Medical School's Stem Cell Institute, will share updates on the Stem Cell Institute at the Caffeinated Conversations on Research meeting on Tuesday, March 19, in 213 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. Refreshments will be available at 3:15 p.m. and the presentation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Jakub will present examples of current research projects and highlight opportunities for collaboration, giving CVM faculty and staff an opportunity to learn more about the translational mission of the Stem Cell Institute and how to access the institute’s resources.

College to present $472,000 in scholarships

College advancement and academic and student affairs staff are gearing up for the April 12 spring scholarship reception, where $472,000 in scholarships will be awarded. The amount is an all-time high, topping the $421,000 in scholarships awarded in 2012 and $350,000 in 2011.

Research Animal Medicine Club to host Americans for Medical Progress event

The Research Animal Medicine Club will host a lecture and workshop presented by Kristen Bocanegra, vice president of Americans for Medical Progress, on April 16. Americans for Medical Progress is a nonprofit organization focusing on public outreach that builds understanding and appreciation for necessary and humane animal research. The lecture, scheduled for noon-1 p.m. in 213-215 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center, will discuss society’s investment in research and the public’s understanding of the use of animals in medicine. The workshop, scheduled for 5-7 p.m. in 213-215 Pomeroy, will focus on developing tools to speak freely and openly about the use of animals in biomedical research.  For more information and to RSVP, contact Chris Thomson at thoms266@umn.edu.

Clinical Investigation Center (top)

Dogs are needed for a variety of studies in anesthesia, cancer, dentistry, emergency/critical care, internal medicine, neurology, and orthopedics/surgery, some of which help cover the cost of care. For information about current studies, visit the Clinical Investigation Center website at www.cvm.umn.edu/cic/current.

Needs a home (top)

  • Mandy, a 3-4-year-old shepherd/cattle dog mix. A long-term foster dog, Mandy is a great pet, but may do best as an only pet with a person who would enjoy working with a challenging dog. Mandy weighs about 35 pounds and can be very dog- and cat-aggressive, but loves people. She is very playful and has had basic obedience and agility training. She has also had dog-aggression training, but may still be a project in that respect. For more information, e-mail prove008@umn.edu.
