CVM to collaborate on new research on seizures

The Mayo Clinic and partners from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and NeuroVista Corporation have been awarded a $7.5 million grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the National Institutes of Health, to study new ways to predict and control epileptic seizures in dogs and people.

Epilepsy affects approximately 1 percent of the human population, with an estimated 50 million people worldwide currently suffering from the disorder. The hallmark of epilepsy is the seizure―a sudden and often violent event that strikes patients without warning. The goal of the research is to use information gleaned from real-time electroencephalograms (EEGs) to consistently detect impending seizures and develop methods of preventing these seizures through fast-acting drug therapies.

The grant awards $1.5 million a year for up to five years. The principal investigators of the studies are Greg Worrell, M.D., Ph.D., Mayo Clinic; Ned Patterson, D.V.M., Ph.D., University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine; Jim Cloyd, Pharm.D., University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy; Charles Vite, D.V.M., Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine; Brian Litt, M.D., Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania; and Kent Leyde, chief technology officer of NeuroVista Corporation of Seattle, Washington.

New leadership for CAHFS

The Center for Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) is undergoing some changes in leadership. Dr. Jeff Bender, former director, recently accepted an opportunity to take a leadership role as liaison in the College of Veterinary Medicine/School of Public Health partnership, a new role that will enable him to focus more on newly funded grants while maintaining an active role in veterinary public health teaching. Leadership of CAHFS has moved to Scott Wells, CAHFS director of academic programs, and Linda Valeri, CAHFS director of operations.

Gene Hugoson awarded Siehl Prize for Excellence in Agriculture

Gene Hugoson, analyst with the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety, has been named a recipient of the Siehl Prize in Agriculture, an annual prize awarded by the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. As Minnesota’s agriculture commissioner for 15 years—in three different administrations—Gene's priorities were expanding markets for agricultural products and enhancing the protection of the state’s food supply. The southern Minnesota farmer also modernized the agriculture department and was elected by his fellow state agriculture commissioners to lead their national association. The Siehl Prize was created in the early 1990s by a gift from New Ulm-area livestock breeder and businessman Eldon Siehl. The recipients, who were announced last week as part of National Agriculture Week, will receive a $50,000 award, a sculpture, and lapel pin at a ceremony on May 24. Learn more
