College kicks off curriculum reviewThe College has begun a curriculum review effort led by Peggy Root Kustritz, assistant dean of education. Peggy is seeking input from faculty, staff, students, and outside constituents, and has established a blog at http://blog.lib.umn.edu/rootk001/myblog/ for people to get more information and post comments. There also will be regular opportunities for face-to-face meetings. The curriculum review board is made up of Drs. Dave Brown and Jim Mickelson from Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, Mike Conzemius and Dan Feeney from Veterinary Clinical Sciences, and John Fetrow and Erin Malone from Veterinary Population Medicine. The current curriculum was implemented in 1997. Leman Science in Practice Award recipient announced Gordon D. Spronk, D.V.M., of Pipestone, Minnesota, will be honored with the Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Pfizer Animal Health. Established by the College in 1994, the Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award is recognized as one of the most prestigious in the swine industry. Presented annually at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference in September, it honors individuals whose achievements contribute significantly to the body of knowledge related to swine health and management. Read more
Veterinary Student Supply book fair is April 7Veterinary Student Supply will sponsor an Elsevier book fair on Thursday, April 7, from 10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine lobby. Check out the Saunder's and Mosby books with special pricing!
Workshops on building successful research teams offered for faculty and PIs Howard Gadlin, Ph.D., National Institutes of Health ombudsman and nationally recognized leader in higher education ombudsman work, will present "Building Successful Research Teams: Preventing and Managing Conflict" on April 11 and April 12. This interactive workshop for faculty and principal investigators will focus on strategies for building successful research teams by anticipating and preventing conflict, reducing the standard reactions of paralysis and avoidance, and developing skills for intervening and discussing difficult topics. This workshop has been designated by the Office of the Vice President for Research to satisfy the Awareness/Discussion component of the Responsible Conduct of Research continuing education requirement. Join the discussion on Monday, April 11, from 3-5 p.m., in the Mississippi Room, Coffman Memorial Union, or Tuesday, April 12, from 9-11 a.m., in 145 Veterinary Science. For details and registration, go to www1.umn.edu/ocr/about/faculty-workshop.html.
Veterinary Medical Library unveils new Web site
The Veterinary Medical Library has unveiled a new Web site at http://hsl.lib.umn.edu/vetmed. Staff at the Health Sciences Libraries worked to create the site over the past year, conducting a review of library and commercial Web sites; engaging in testing with actual users through surveys, targeted interviews, and usability testing; putting the best practices in Web design to work; and producing results: a new Web site designed to make it easier for faculty, staff, and students to do library-related work and connect to the services and help they need when and where they need them. Andre Nault, head of the Veterinary Medical Library, summarized the benefits of the new site: - A simpler, flatter design. The most-used services and tools were brought out from under layers of secondary pages and made available from every page on the site through drop-down menus. Now, the links to inter-library loan, the staff directory, reserves, and many other tools and services are only one click away from each other and from every other page on the site.
- Fast access to key tools. One of the features users said they most valued on the old site was the quick access it provided to their favorite tools. That ease of use was preserved, improved, and expanded upon in the new design. The list of Quicklinks has been rationalized and enriched with easy access to contextual help, and the "Resources for..." pages are more prominent and easier to use.
- Better access to help. The "Help" pages, hidden and underutilized in the old design, have been reworked and made more prominent. Having trouble with PubMed? Click on the question mark in the list of Quicklinks to jump to the tutorial pages. Even more help is waiting under the "Help" link on every page of the site.
- Greater flexibility for the future. The new site is modular and flexible in a way the old site was not, allowing the library to continuously develop and improve the site, respond more quickly to needs, add new features, and improve users' experience.
Andre and the Health Sciences Libraries are eager to hear what you think. To submit feedback, visit http://hsl.lib.umn.edu/vetmed and click on the "Feedback" tab on the far left of your browser's window.

The team traveled throughout Kosovo, visiting small dairy farms, milk collection centers, dairy processing plants, national testing laboratories, and the University of Prishtina. Read more Porter and Ziegler edit first turkey disease reference guideDrs. Robert Porter and Andre F. Ziegler are the editors of the first Turkey Disease Reference Guide. Developed in conjunction with Elanco Animal Health, this laminated field guide provides useful lesion recognition and grading schedules to producers in the field. It will be a helpful guide for growers and veterinarians alike to recognize a variety of common disease conditions. Alexander Primus receives top AASV scholarshipAlexander Primus, a second-year veterinary student, received a $5,000 scholarship for top student presentation at the American Association of Swine Veterinarians annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, March 5-8. Alexander's presentation was titled "Identification of a New Potentially Virulent Brachyspira Species Affecting Swine." Competition for the scholarship was tough: Veterinary students representing 12 universities submitted 50 abstracts for consideration. From those submissions, 15 students were selected to present during the annual meeting. Judges representing private practice, higher education, and industry selected the recipients on the basis of communications skills in the writing of the abstract and the presentation of the case report, and on applicability of the research to swine medicine. Alpharma Animal Health provided the financial support for the award. Four students are winners in AASV poster competition The American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) announced the winners of the student poster competition sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica at the AASV annual meeting in Phoenix March 5-8. The awardees included four University of Minnesota students:
- Evan Van Beusekom, who received a $500 award for the top student poster, “Euthanasia by Electrocution in 5 kg to 15 kg Nursery Pigs.”
- Andrea Pitkin, who received a $400 award.
- Amber Hazel, who received a $300 award.
- Abigail Redalen, who received a $200 award.
In addition to the poster competition awards, each student poster participant received a $250 travel stipend from Alpharma Animal Health.
