Veterinary medicine industry contributes $1.5 billion to Minnesota economy A recent analysis found that the economic contribution of the veterinary medicine industry in Minnesota totals $1.5 billion, which includes an estimated $680 million in wages and salaries paid to Minnesota workers. The largest share of economic contribution is derived from private veterinary practices and clinics, from which an estimated total of $1.2 billion in economic activity was generated. Other contributors include private industry veterinarians ($37 million) and government veterinarians ($24 million). Training and educating veterinarians and veterinary technicians, conducting veterinary medical research, and providing animal health diagnostic and treatment services for the state resulted in $230 million in output contributed to the state economy. Prepared by University of Minnesota Extension and the Department of Applied Economics, the report was sponsored by the College of Veterinary Medicine, Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, and Minnesota Veterinary Medical Foundation. Nominations sought for Research Day awardsThe Office of the Associate Dean for Research is seeking nominations for the Distinguished Research Alumnus, Distinguished Research Partner, and Pfizer Animal Health Award for Research Excellence to be presented at the College's annual Points of Pride Research Day event on October 10. Nominations should be submitted via e-mail to Jessica Raines-Jones at vetres@umn.edu by 4:30 p.m. April 16. For more information, contact Jessica at 4-2744 or see the "Call for Nominations" e-mail and attachments distributed on March 29.
Veterinary Anatomy Building memorialized with plaque
A plaque has been installed on the site of the old Veterinary Anatomy Building to memorialize the historic structure, which was demolished last year. The plaque reads— Old Anatomy Building 1901-2011
Original facility housing the Division of Veterinary Medicine in the College of Agriculture. Contained laboratories, classrooms, animal wards, office, and a unique circular operating room with a conical roof, which became known as the "round room."
Renamed "Old Anatomy" when the new School of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1947. Animal care activities, including the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, continued in the facility through 2002.
Student Appreciation Day Pancake Breakfast is ThursdayThe College will host the first Student Appreciation Day Pancake Breakfast this Thursday, April 12, from 7-9 a.m. in the Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine lobby. Veterinary students, graduate students, interns, residents, faculty, and staff are invited. Hot-off-the-griddle pancakes, toppings, coffee, and orange juice will be served. Contact: Bre Ward, ward0290@umn.edu Book Fair planned for April 17Veterinary Student Supply (VSS) will be holding a Book Fair with Elsevier (Saunder's and Mosby) titles on Tuesday, April 17, from 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the lobby of Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine. VSS will be offering a 10 percent discount along with some additional special offers. April 17 is Beautiful U DayBeautiful U Day, which takes place April 17, will include a campus-wide building cleanout event (complete with cookies for cleaners) and the first-ever ReUse-A-Palooza, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Northrop Plaza. More than 100 gently used bikes will be available for $50 or less, along with a selection of quality surplus items collected by the ReUse Program. For more information, see Beautiful U Day. World Veterinary Day will focus on antimicrobial resistanceOn April 28, World Veterinary Day will raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance. The American Veterinary Medical Association plans to promote the event via an advertisement with the message "Antimicrobial resistance: It's everyone's responsibility," as well as a press release on pet medications, a podcast, and other promotions. The World Veterinary Association created World Veterinary Day in 2000 as an annual celebration of the veterinary profession. Learn more at www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/apr12/120401g.asp.
VMC recommends year-round heartworm, flea, and tick preventionThe Veterinary Medical Center's General Practice Service recommends the use of year-round heartworm, intestinal parasite, and flea/tick preventives.
Although dogs in Minnesota are at lower risk of parasite infections in the winter, intestinal parasites and fleas can be a year-round problem. Also, with the unusually warm weather we’ve had this winter, ticks and mosquitoes are out earlier than usual. Evidence also shows that compliance is much better with year-round preventive versus seasonal use, as people get in the habit of giving the preventives once a month, every month. These recommendations are also consistent with the national Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) guidelines. Veterinarians who discuss parasite control with their clients are asked to consider recommending year-round protection, as the VMC and national guidelines recommend. If you have any questions, stop by the General Practice Service or visit www.capcvet.org.
Veterinary ophthalmologists to donate service animal eye exams in MayThe fifth annual American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event will bring together veterinary ophthalmologists and thousands of service animals for free eye exams in May. More than 200 board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists throughout the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico—including Dr. Christine Lim of the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center—will provide free sight-saving eye exams to thousands of eligible service animals. To qualify, animals must be “active working animals” that were certified by a formal training program or organization or currently enrolled in a formal training program. Owners or agents for the animal must first register the animal via an online registration form at www.ACVOeyeexam.org. Registration began April 1 and ends April 30. Learn more at www.ACVOeyeexam.org.
Learn more about creating a data management plan for your grant application In January 2011, the National Science Foundation began requiring a data management plan for all new grant proposals. A new University Libraries workshop geared toward graduate students, faculty, and researchers provides an overview of the questions to consider when creating a data management plan, with a focus on data preservation issues and tools for sharing your data, like subject-based repositories. "Creating a Data Management Plan for Your Grant Application" will be offered on Thursday, April 19, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in 314 Walter Library. Register for the course at https://www.lib.umn.edu/services/workshops/creating-data-management-plan-your-grant-application-thu-04192012-1200pm-130pm. The workshop satisfies RCR continuing education awareness/discussion requirements. For more resources, see the "Managing your Data" Web page at https://www.lib.umn.edu/datamanagement.
In memory: Dr. Leo Anthony Zehrer, class of 1953Dr. Leo Anthony Zehrer, class of 1953, died peacefully at his home in Brooten, Minnesota, on March 27. Known as "Doc" or "Tony," Leo joined Dr. W.T. Williams in veterinary practice in Brooton in 1953. When Dr. Williams retired in 1961, Leo purchased the practice, which he ran until 1974, when he became a veterinarian for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. He worked for the state for another 19 years, covering seven counties. Leo is survived by his wife, Vi, of Brooton, six daughters, and many other family members.
