Full accreditation continued At its spring 2011 meeting, the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education voted to continue full accreditation for the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Peggy Root Kustritz to receive distinguished teaching award April 25 Margaret (Peggy) Root Kustritz, assistant dean of education, will be honored with the Graduate-Professional Teaching Award for outstanding contributions to postbaccalaureate, graduate, and professional education at the Distinguished Teaching Awards Ceremony Monday, April 25, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St. S.E., Minneapolis. A reception will follow the ceremony. The Distinguished Teaching Award is the University of Minnesota’s most prestigious award for excellence in teaching. Peggy will also be one of 15 faculty members inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. As members of the academy, these faculty members provide important leadership to the university community by serving as mentors, advisers, and spokespersons for the University's mission. “This occasion celebrates the significance and value the University places on excellent teaching,” said Tom Sullivan, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. “These teachers have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their commitment to work with students and see them grow and succeed. It is very fitting that we shine a spotlight on these faculty members’ remarkable efforts, and extend our deep appreciation." There is no charge to attend the awards ceremony. Registration is required and available at www.MinnesotaAlumni.org/DTA. Workshops on building successful research teams are today and Tuesday Howard Gadlin, Ph.D., National Institutes of Health ombudsman and nationally recognized leader in higher education ombudsman work, will present "Building Successful Research Teams: Preventing and Managing Conflict" on April 11 and April 12. This interactive workshop for faculty and principal investigators will focus on strategies for building successful research teams by anticipating and preventing conflict, reducing the standard reactions of paralysis and avoidance, and developing skills for intervening and discussing difficult topics. Join the discussion on Monday, April 11, from 3-5 p.m., in the Mississippi Room, Coffman Memorial Union, or Tuesday, April 12, from 9-11 a.m., in 145 Veterinary Science. This workshop has been designated by the Office of the Vice President for Research to satisfy the Awareness/Discussion component of the Responsible Conduct of Research continuing education requirement. For details, go to www1.umn.edu/ocr/about/faculty-workshop.html. Public Health Institute set for May 23-June 10 The 10th annual Public Health Institute, scheduled for May 23-June 10, will offer graduate credit and professional development courses in culturally responsive public health practice, environmental health sciences, food protection, global health, infectious disease epidemiology, public health leadership and management, public health preparedness, response and recovery, research methods, and health and nutrition in women and children. Faculty and guest speakers from the College of Veterinary Medicine will include Dr. Will Hueston, Shaun Kennedy, Dr. Larissa Minicucci, Dr. Katey Pelican, Dr. Randall Singer, Dr. Dominic Travis, and Dr. Scott Wells. Limited financial support is available to qualifying students for select courses. For course listings and registration information, go to www.sph.umn.edu/ce/institute or call 612-626-4515. Learn more Americans are spending more on their pets A recent American Pet Products Association survey projects that veterinary care spending among U.S pet owners is likely to increase to $12.2 billion this year from $11 billion last year, despite the tough economy. Some 16 percent of dog owners and 13 percent of cat owners responding to the survey said their pet's health care treatment would take precedence over their own. Monday, May 30 University closed for Memorial Day holiday New studies explore lymphoma and sedation Two new studies opened for enrollment in the Clinical Investigation Center last week: - “LICKing Lymphoma”
Principal investigator: Jaime Modiano This study seeks to determine whether the addition of an experimental drug to standard chemotherapy reduces or “kills” lymphoma-initiating cells (LIC) by increasing their sensitivity to chemotherapy. Seven to ten dogs with newly diagnosed or highly suspected lymphoma are needed for this clinical trial, which will cover up to $2,500 of the owner’s costs. Look for flyers around the Veterinary Medical Center and in Oncology. For more information, please contact Amber Winter at 612-624-1352 or alwinter@umn.edu or Jaime Modiano at 612-625-7436 or Modiano@umn.edu. To read more about this first veterinary comparative medicine study funded by the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institution, see the Winter 2011 issue of Synergy at www.cvm.umn.edu/accr/prod/groups/cvm/@pub/@cvm/documents/asset/cvm_asset_291165.pdf. - Pharmacoeconomics of sedation
Principal Investigator: Jane Quandt How does sedation affect the time it takes and the number of people involved in procedures where sedation is optional? Researchers are comparing four different protocols of dexmedetomidine with and without butorphanol and manual restraint for primarily ultrasound and imaging procedures in which manual restraint is often chosen over optional sedation. They need 100 dogs that have not had recent anesthesia or use of dexmedetomidine and/or butorphanol. All costs of sedation are covered by the study, and the patient will receive additional one-on-one care as the sedation and recovery process are monitored. To enroll a patient, call Anesthesia Prep and ask for Dr. Quandt, Dr. Barletta, or Dr. Almeida, or contact Amber Winter at 612-624-1352 or alwinter@umn.edu.
