Veterinary Medical Center to offer new treatment for cancer

The Veterinary Medical Center will soon offer microwave ablation as another option for treating certain types of cancer in small and large animals. Microwave ablation uses a very thin microwave antenna, placed within the tumor using imaging guidance, to generate localized heat sufficient to kill cancerous cells. In humans, state-of-the-art thermal ablation therapy has shown promise in the treatment of single and multi-focal malignancies of the liver, lung, kidneys, prostate, and bone—cancers that are often difficult or impossible to treat with other modalities. This capability was made possible, in part, through a research grant attained by Dr. Chris Ober in Medical Imaging, in addition to other resources at the College. The unit is portable and will be available for use at the Piper Clinic as well as in the Small and Large Animal Hospitals.

It's National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week

The Clinical Pathology Lab is offering tours, a medallion hunt, and more in celebration of National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week April 22-28. The week is an annual celebration of the more than 300,000 medical laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health care, performing and interpreting more than 10 billion laboratory tests in the U.S. every year. To take part in the medallion hunt, look for clues across from the lab receiving window. Daily "microscopic challenges" will also be offered, as will a "guess-the-number-of-tube-caps" game, with prizes to be awarded to the winners. On Thursday, April 26, the lab will provide tours at 7:30 a.m., 7:45 a.m.. 3:00 p.m., 3:15 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. starting near the cytology room, with snacks provided after the tour.

A one-year anniversary for Duke

Dr. Chris Stauthammer examines Duke.

About a year ago, on April 11, 2011, a team from the College of Veterinary Medicine and University of Minnesota Medical School successfully performed heart surgery for tetralogy of Fallot on Duke, a 2-year-old American Staffordshire terrier, at the Veterinary Medical Center. The palliative procedure, which involved the use of a modified Blalock-Taussig shunt to direct blood flow to the lungs, had been performed on dogs before, but this was the first time it had been done at the Veterinary Medical Center or anywhere else in Minnesota. The surgical team was headed by Richard W. Bianco, associate professor of surgery and director of Experimental Surgical Services at the Medical School and adjunct associate professor of veterinary medicine, and Dr. Vicki Wilke, assistant clinical professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

This past week, the team got a progress report from Duke's owners: Duke is doing great.

"Duke’s exercise tolerance is still excellent; he can now walk (probably) indefinitely; I know that I get tired before he does," wrote Duke's owner. "He (we) enjoys his walks greatly. Every time I go out with him I am reminded of what a gift your operation is to us. He seems to enjoy his life.

"Thank you all again for your respective roles in the care of our friend. (We) realize how lucky we are to have such a fine facility so close, and such an excellent team to care for our sweet dog."

Statista.com is the first statistics portal in the world to integrate over 60,000 diverse topics of data and facts from over 10,000 sources onto a single professional platform. Categorized into over 20 market sectors, Statista provides business customers, researchers, and the academic community with direct access to relevant quantitative facts on agriculture, finance, politics, and many more areas of interest. Sources of information include market researchers, trade publications, scientific journals, and government databases. Access Statista from the libraries' electronic resources trials page at https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/CDM/ElectronicResourcesTrials.

Research retreat set for May 22

The College’s Signature Program Annual Research Retreat will be held on May 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in room 105 in the Cargill Building. Keynote speakers will include Dr. David Haworth, president and chief executive officer of Morris Animal Foundation, and another speaker to be announced. The event will include a panel discussion on the CVM’s global land grant research mission, developing a successful “one health” research program. The retreat will also include five parallel breakout sessions:

  • The CVM’s international research programs
  • How to build and strengthen internal and external partnerships
  • Bridging "bench to bedside"
  • Fundraising efforts to build a sustainable research future: envisioning a new financial model
  • Research infrastructure (core resources; building successful research programs for new investigators, pre/postdoctoral fellows, and residents)

New project explores MRSA colonization and infection in swine veterinarians

University of Minnesota researchers hope to improve understanding of the frequency, duration, and risks of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization and infection among swine veterinarians. Research will examine S. aureus colonization patterns in 70 U.S. swine veterinarians over 18 months, determine the incidence of occupation-related skin and soft-tissue infections, assess protective measures used by swine veterinarians, and quantify the associations between exposure to pigs and the risk that swine veterinarians will be colonized or infected with MRSA or methicillin-susceptible S. aureus strains, says CVM faculty member Dr. Peter Davies, principal investigator on the project. Drs. Claudia Munoz-Zanzi, assistant professor, School of Public Health and Srinand Sreevatsan, associate professor, College of Veterinary Medicine, are the project's co-investigators.

The project will provide the first longitudinal assessment of the risk of human colonization and infection with livestock-associated MRSA and its association with animal contact and personal protection practices. This information will be relevant to continuing education of veterinarians and farmers with respect to reducing occupational risk of zoonotic disease. The project is being conducted through the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center at the University of Minnesota. The center is funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Read more about the project at http://umash.umn.edu/projects/projects/mrsa.html.

Representatives of Raptor Center interviewed about bald eagles, peregrine falcons and more

"Bald Eagle Sightings Increasing in Minneapolis, Suburbs," a story aired on WCCO TV on April 6, included a visit to The Raptor Center and an interview with Dr. Julia Ponder, executive director. The story is online at http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2012/04/06/bald-eagle-sightings-increasing-in-minneapolis-suburbs/.

"Thirty Years Later: Peregrine Falcons Recovered, Thriving in Great Lakes States," an article in the Great Lakes Echo, quoted Dr. Patrick Redig, CVM professor and co-founder of The Raptor Center.

"Raptor Center Visits Charter Schools," a story in the Hutchinson Leader, covered educational programs by interpretive naturalist Mike Billington. Chanhassen Villager published a photo taken at a program at Jordan Elementary School and also cited Mike.
