Peggy Root Kustritz to receive distinguished teaching award today

PUB/CVM/Root-KustritzMargaret2011Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Root Kustritz, assistant dean of education, will be honored with the Graduate-Professional Teaching Award for outstanding contributions to postbaccalaureate, graduate, and professional education at the Distinguished Teaching Awards Ceremony today from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St. S.E., Minneapolis. A reception will follow the ceremony.

The Distinguished Teaching Award is the University of Minnesota’s most prestigious award for excellence in teaching. Peggy will also be one of 15 faculty members inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. As members of the academy, these faculty members provide important leadership to the university community by serving as mentors, advisers, and spokespersons for the University's mission.

“This occasion celebrates the significance and value the University places on excellent teaching,” said Tom Sullivan, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. “These teachers have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their commitment to work with students and see them grow and succeed. It is very fitting that we shine a spotlight on these faculty members’ remarkable efforts, and extend our deep appreciation."

Registration is underway for One Health Workshop 2011: Creating One Health Partnerships in International Development, on Wednesday, May 11, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the A.J. Johnson Great Room of the McNamara Alumni Center.

The objective of each year's One Health Workshop is to identity three or four new initiatives with a high likelihood of success in fostering government-industry-academic collaborations in One Health teaching, research, or service. Seed grants will be given to help kick off several of these new collaborations. Keynote speaker will be James Nyoro, managing director, Africa, at the Rockefeller Foundation.

Lunch is included, and a reception will follow the conference. For more information and to register, go to http://register.cce.umn.edu/Course.pl?sect_key=185241. Register by April 29. If you have any questions, please contact Sara at 612-625-8709 or deus0003@umn.edu.

Service dogs to receive free eye exams at Veterinary Medical Center

Service dogs will be receiving free eye exams at the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) in May as part of the fourth annual ACVO-Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam Event.

Sponsored by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) and the animal pharmaceutical firm Merial, the event offers complimentary eye screening examinations to qualifying service animals. VMC ophthalmologist Dr. Christine Lim and more than 160 other board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists across the U.S. and Canada will donate their time to provide screening eye exams to service dogs. Last year, more than 3,200 active service dogs received free eye exams throughout the month of May.

The veterinarians will be looking for early signs of eye trouble or anything that could limit the dog's vision in the future. To qualify, dogs must be “active working animals” that were certified by a formal training program or organization or currently enrolled in a formal training program. Registration began April 1 around the country and runs through April 29. To register, clients should go to www.ACVOEyeExam.org; appointments will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, visit www.acvoeyeexam.org/press/pressframe.html.
