Major power outage in Veterinary Science building
The Veterinary Science building was flooded with water and had a major power outage on Thursday night. The fire department sent several crews to help sweep up the mess, which appeared to have happened because a pipe burst on the third floor. Veterinary Science was still without power on Friday morning. A backup generator was installed, but was unable to handle the normal power needs of the building. Faculty and staff with offices and labs in the affected area were allowed into the building once backup power was on, but others were asked to find other areas to work. Scholarships awarded at annual reception The College awarded 78 scholarships totaling more than $300,000 at the annual CVM scholarship reception at the Continuing Education and Conference Center on April 27. Dr. Bill Hartmann, class of 1978, was the recipient of the 2012 College of Veterinary Medicine Outstanding Service Award. As executive director of the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, Dr. Hartmann has been a strong supporter of the College and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which has received increased support from the state and the University. The student speaker was Andrew Kryzer, class of 2015. A first-year student from Lewiston, Minnesota, Andrew is part of the Veterinary Food Animal Scholars Track (VetFAST) program, is interested in cattle and swine medicine, and works in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Last fall, Andrew received the Dr. Richard Huston and the Robert Merrill scholarships, which recognize talented incoming students who intend to pursue careers in food animal medicine. CVM faculty members receive Global Spotlight grantsThe University's Global Programs and Strategy Alliance has awarded two Global Spotlight international research seed grants to CVM faculty members. The grants support innovative project-based scholarly research and creative production of an international nature with a focus on the region of Latin America and the Caribbean or the issue of urbanization.
