Kronos to be updated today; outages possible this afternoon

The CVM's Kronos timekeeping system will be upgraded to Version 6.2 effective today, May 9. Employees may experience outages this afternoon while the system is being upgraded after payroll close, but Kronos should be up and running by Tuesday morning. The upgraded version will have a new, more user-friendly look and will provide managers with better tools to manage their staff’s time.

College confers degrees at annual commencement ceremony

The College of Veterinary Medicine awarded doctor of veterinary medicine degrees to 90 students at the annual commencement ceremony at the Ted Mann Concert Hall on April 30. Ten PhD degrees, six DVM/MPH degrees, and four master of science degrees were also awarded. Read more

Students honored at annual scholarship reception

The College awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships at the annual CVM scholarship reception at the Continuing Education and Conference Center on April 15. The CVM awards ceremony has changed format in recent years to a smaller and more intimate event that connects students and donors. The faculty on the awards committee participated, as did some members of the Administrative Council, rather than the past format, where all faculty were encouraged to attend. Team successfully performs rare heart surgery at VMC

A team from the University of Minnesota Medical School and College of Veterinary Medicine successfully performed heart surgery for tetralogy of Fallot on Duke, a 2-year-old American Staffordshire terrier, at the Veterinary Medical Center on April 11. It was the first time the surgery had been conducted at the Veterinary Medical Center or anywhere else in Minnesota. Read more

CVM Facilities Resource Center established

In support of the Blue Ribbon Panel's recommendations, a centralized Facilities Resource Center (FRC) has been created to serve the College of Veterinary Medicine. Tim Gordon, facilities manager, will lead the FRC, and Steen Erikson, formerly with the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, will work with Tim to support this effort. The FRC will assume centralized responsibility for all key and access control for the College and provide support for facilities renovations, space management, office and lab moves, capital equipment acquisition and disposal, and a variety of facilities projects.

Tim and Steen will be meeting with department and center leadership over the next few weeks to discuss expectations and establish best practices for task management across the College. Faculty and staff input will be valued as the team works to make the Facilities Resource Center into a model for operational efficiency throughout the College. For more information, visit the Facilities Resource Center Web page at www.cvm.umn.edu/facultystaff/facilities/home.html. Details will be added to the Web site as best practices are developed.

Raptor Release and Equine Connection published

Equine Connection, the Equine Center's publication, and Raptor Release, The Raptor Center's magazine, were just published. The Spring 2011 issue of Equine Connection, distributed at Horse Expo April 29-May 1 and online at www.cvm.umn.edu/prod/groups/cvm/@pub/@cvm/documents/asset/cvm_asset_330454.pdf, explores equine dentistry; sports medicine; premature and dysmature foals; research on arthritis, shivers, and genetic disease; and upcoming events. The Spring/Summer issue of Raptor Release, online at www.cvm.umn.edu/prod/groups/cvm/@pub/@cvm/@raptor/documents/asset/cvm_asset_337113.pdf, includes stories about TRC's work with the Galapagos hawk, young donors, conserving the orange-breasted hawk, Harley the eagle, and more.

NIFA begins accepting applications for loan repayment program today

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) begins accepting applications today from veterinarians wishing to participate in the 2011 cycle of the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program. The purpose of the program is to provide a financial incentive for veterinarians to practice in areas lacking in food animal veterinary care. In return for a commitment of three years of veterinary services in a designated veterinary shortage area, NIFA may repay up to $25,000 of student loan debt per year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved six veterinary shortage areas in Minnesota this year; a map of the shortage areas is available at http://tinyurl.com/veterinaryshortages-mn. Interested veterinarians need to apply by July 8, and offers will be made by September 30. Applicant information can be found at http://tinyurl.com/VMLRP-applicants.

One Health Workshop is Wednesday

One Health Workshop 2011: Creating One Health Partnerships in International Development, is Wednesday, May 11, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the A.J. Johnson Great Room of the McNamara Alumni Center.

The objective of each year's One Health Workshop is to identity three or four new initiatives with a high likelihood of success in fostering government-industry-academic collaborations in One Health teaching, research, or service. Seed grants will be given to help kick off several of these new collaborations. Keynote speaker will be James Nyoro, managing director, Africa, at the Rockefeller Foundation.

Lunch is included, and a reception will follow the conference. For more information, go to http://register.cce.umn.edu/Course.pl?sect_key=185241. If you have questions, contact Sara at 612-625-8709 or deus0003@umn.edu.

Retirement incentive option closes May 15

Interested faculty, P&A, civil service, union-represented, and University employees enrolled in federal health benefits must complete an application and meet the program requirements before May 15. All faculty and staff employees who elect to participate in RIO must retire on a date mutually acceptable to the employee and his or her unit, but no later than January 11, 2012.

Safety training scheduled for May 17

A safety training session covering biological and infectious waste and decontamination is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17, from noon-1 p.m. in 215 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. Conducted by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety, this training will be added to your online PeopleSoft training record. The training is appropriate for staff who work in laboratories or hospital facilities where they may be exposed to cultures and stocks of infectious agents, recombinant DNA, blood or body fluids, animal waste, sharps, etc. Procedures for ensuring personal safety and the safe handling of potentially infectious material will be covered. Decontamination will also be reviewed to provide you with guidance about various methods to sanitize workspaces, waste, and instruments. Lab-specific training should always be relied upon to learn about specific risks and safety procedures in your lab, since each lab or clinic may work with different agents and/or have different exposure risks. Register at www.surveymonkey.com/s/GRX3LY5.

Dudley Avenue to be resurfaced

Dudley Avenue, the road leading to the Leatherdale Equine Center, will be resurfaced May 18-19, weather permitting. The affected section of Dudley will be barricaded, detours posted, and the surface prepared and overlayed with new asphalt. Traffic will then be kept off the new surface for a couple of days for curing purposes. The road is expected to reopen by May 21.

Conference room to be renovated May 31-June 10

The conference room in 441 VMC will not be available while renovations are underway May 31-June 10. Cabinet removal and wall alterations are scheduled to be completed.
