For details, visit http://lillyconferences.com/tc/default.shtml AVMA expresses alarm over rural veterinarian shortage More than 1,500 counties in the United States are without a single veterinarian to treat animals, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reports. That amounts to 44 states with at least one shortage area, designated annually by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "This has been bad and getting worse for a number of years," said Dr. Ron DeHaven, CEO of the AVMA. "There has not been a time when it was worse than it is now." The shortage is most acute in states with the most food-producing animals. In 2010, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture designated 187 veterinary shortage areas nationwide. And the problem extends beyond protecting animals. Almost 70 percent of human diseases have an animal origin, DeHaven says, and are often caused by bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli transmitted to humans from animals. Read more Faculty and staff news (top) Trevor Ames and Andre Nault publish articles in JVME The latest issue of the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education included articles by Trevor Ames, dean, and Andre Nault, head of the Veterinary Medical Library. The competition was stiff: The ACVS Research Committee received 17 proposals for the Surgeon-in-Training grant program. Jose's advisor is Dr. Troy Trumble. Need a home (top) Foster home sought for Orion, a blood donor cat The Companion Animal Blood Donor Program is looking for a foster home for Orion, one of its blood donors. A 5-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair brown tabby, Orion was recently obtained from Crossroads Animal Shelter. A very sweet large cat, he has been housed with other cats, but not tested with dogs yet. Contact Beth Olmstead at johns547@umn.edu. Rocky, a German shorthaired pointer Rocky's owner recently died, and Rocky needs a new home. The 7-year-old, 85-pound male German shorthaired pointer is very affectionate and friendly, knows basic commands, gets along well with most dogs, chases cats, and would probably do best in a home without small children. Very healthy and energetic, he is up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/tick/heartworm preventive. He is used to having room to run, but trained to use invisible fencing. Rocky was a constant companion to his former owner. Contact Dr. Diane Battjes at 612-203-8057.
