Education Day celebrates excellence in education The CVM celebrated its second annual Education Day on May 23. The keynote address, "Transforming Education in the 21st Century," was given by Dr. Debra Olson, associate dean, School of Public Health, and faculty attended breakout sessions on 21st-century graduate student mentoring, curriculum revision, the use of handheld devices in health sciences education, and more. Faculty members also presented posters, demonstrations, and computer presentations related to education and innovative teaching methods, from the development of a new course in critical scientific reading to teaching camelid anatomy. Education Day concluded with the presentation of awards to faculty and staff who demonstrate excellence in education. Vote for Staff Appreciation Day award recipients by FridayThe polls are open for voting for this year's Carl (Chuck) Edborg III and Outstanding Faculty and P&A award recipients. The awards will be presented at the Staff Appreciation Day event on June 17 from 11:30 a.m. to noon in 215 Pomeroy Student Alumni Learning Center. A picnic luncheon will follow from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the lobby area outside 125/135 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine. Faculty and staff were asked to RSVP for the luncheon via SurveyMonkey by June 3.
Volunteers sought to help with Staff Appreciation Day luncheon Volunteers are sought to help with the Staff Appreciation Day luncheon on Friday, June 17. Crews are needed to set up, cover tables, and cut buns at 9 a.m. in the lobby area of Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine; grillers are needed at 11 a.m. on the lawn between Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine and the Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center; food and beverage servers are needed starting at 11:30 a.m.; and a cleanup crew is needed starting at about 1:30 p.m. To volunteer, contact Cindy Irons at irons005@umn.edu. CIC adds new NIH-funded study The Clinical Investigation Center (CIC) is now enrolling dogs with cancer in a new one-day, sampling-only study for three specific breed-cancer combinations. They need golden retrievers with lymphoma, Scottish terriers with transitional cell carcinoma, and American cocker spaniels with melanoma. This is an NIH-funded study of sampling techniques, only one or two visits required to sample tumor(s), blood, and saliva. Owners receive $1,000 VMC credit. Contact Mike Henson at 612-625-1770 or henso001@umn.edu, or Amber Winter at 612-624-1352 or alwinter@umn.edu. In other news from the CIC: - Only one more dog with a fragmented coronoid process (elbow dysplasia) is needed for the study of MRI to detect cartilage changes. The owner will pay for arthroscopy, but the study covers the MRI and recheck appointments for six months. Contact Dr. Katja Wucherer at 612-624-5308 or Sara Pracht at prach011@umn.edu or 612-626-3574.
- More Labrador retrievers with and without cruciate ligament injury are needed for a DNA study of this disease. The study consists of one blood sample only. The CIC needs 8-year-old or older Labs that have never had cruciate disease, and Labs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) that will have or have had surgery to repair the condition. Contact Amber Winter at alwinter@umn.edu or 612-626-1352.

Conference room renovations underway The conference room in 441 VMC will not be available this week while cabinet removal and wall alterations are completed. Nominations sought for McKnight Land-Grant Professorships The Office of the Vice President for Research has announced the competition for the 2012–14 McKnight Land-Grant Professorships, a program of career development awards for junior faculty. Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate outstanding professors. The recipients named to this endowed professorship will begin their appointments July 1, 2012, and be awarded a research grant in each of the following two years. Nominations are due Oct. 3. For more information, see McKnight nomination. Facilities Management to retool custodial program Faced with budget reductions like all University departments, Facilities Management recently announced a series of changes to the custodial program aimed at efficiently cleaning large spaces in a healthier and safer manner with fewer custodians. The program is scheduled to launch this summer. Components include the use of more riding equipment; the use of backpack vacuums with high-tech filters; a new, greener, chemical program that uses fewer chemicals; the use of microfiber, a material proven to clean better with less effort; and a "team cleaning" approach.
