CVM Pet of the Game Are you ready for Pet of the Game?

Get your pet's photo ready! The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) is set to kick off the second annual Pet-of-the-Game photo contest during the 2012 Gopher football season, which starts September 8. The contest will give U of M Gopher Sports fans a chance to showcase their pets, express their Gopher spirit, vote for their favorite pictures, and win. The VMC will launch the Pet-of-the-Game contest on the VMC’s official Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/umnvmc, where contestants and spectators will be able to enter their photos and vote on Pet of the Game entries. At each Gopher Football home game, the photo finalists will be displayed on the scoreboard. Winners will receive a $150 VMC gift card and be entered in the grand prize contest for four tickets to the Minnesota-Michigan State game on Nov. 24, a VIP package, and a $500 VMC gift card. Stephanie Valberg to be inducted into Equine Research Hall of Fame

CVM Faculty Stephanie ValbergDr. Stephanie Valberg, director of the Equine Center, will be inducted into the University of Kentucky Equine Research Hall of Fame on September 23 at Keeneland race course in Lexington, Kentucky.

Established by the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Foundation, the Equine Research Hall of Fame is the highest honor for a lifetime of contribution to the body of knowledge in equine research. For a scientist to have merited such distinction is a great tribute to their work. The work of the Hall of Fame members spans several disciplines and covers nearly 100 years of scientific investigation in all parts of the world.

Stephanie established the University's Neuromuscular Diagnostic Laboratory, which receives muscle biopsy submissions from horses around the world. She has been a pioneer in unraveling the mystery of tying up and other muscle disorders in horses. Through her research, previously unknown muscle disorders were discovered, their genetic basis identified, and nutritional strategies developed to minimize muscle pain. Her work in equine myopathies has revolutionized equine practice.

"I am honored to be among such distinguished scientists in the Hall of Fame," Stephanie said. "My research has been fueled by a passion for horses, by the wisdom of colleagues such as Dr. Jim Mickelson, and by the hard work of terrific graduate students."

The other new inductees are George Allen, PhD, a posthumous inductee formerly of the University of Kentucky's Gluck Equine Research Center, and Eugene Lyons, PhD, of the Gluck Equine Research Center. To read more, see www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=20523.

Jeff Bender has new shared position

Dr. Jeff Bender, former director of the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety, has accepted a new shared position with the College of Veterinary Medicine and School of Public Health. A nationally recognized expert in the infectious diseases shared between humans and animals, Dr. Bender is leading an effort to expand “One Health” educational opportunities at the University.

Jeff brings both public and private-sector experience to this effort. Currently serving as co-director of the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center, he came to the University from the Minnesota Department of Health, where he served as state public health veterinarian for Minnesota. He also has experience in private veterinary practice, working with both pets and farm animals.

The primary focus of the One Health collaborations between the College of Veterinary Medicine and School of Public Health will be enhanced educational programs and experiential learning opportunities for students, drawing both graduate and undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines to gain experience in the One Health approach.

This effort will engage programs across the Academic Health Center and the University. Anticipated initiatives include new courses that incorporate a One-Health approach to food safety and food security and expanded opportunities to participate in public policy-related courses. The ultimate goal of these new initiatives is to prepare the next generation to manage the complex health dilemmas that involve people, animals, and the environment.

Doug Weiss to receive ASVCP Lifetime Achievement Award

Doug Weiss, emeritus faculty member, will be the recipient of the 2012 American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP) Lifetime Achievement Award at the ASVCP's national meeting in Seattle December 1-5. Doug was nominated by a group of former residents, including Jed Overmann. The selection process is competitive, and nomination packages are evaluated by a panel of senior academic and industry clinical pathologists, who make a selection, which then must be approved by the ASVCP executive board. Dr. Victor Perman was a previous recipient of this award.

Blood samples still needed from spayed cats

The Clinical Investigation Center (CIC) is still looking for female cats to help a sponsor validate a new assay to indicate the presence of ovaries or ovarian remnants. If validated, the new assay would be helpful to humane societies, rescue groups, and veterinarians when there is no spay history for female animals. The new test would be a non-invasive way to determine reproductive status.

The CIC needs female cats that were spayed between six months and five years ago. They must be at least 6 months old (all permanent teeth present). A blood sample and a few pieces of information will be requested. If you are able to bring your cat to the CIC, CIC staff will either watch your cat for the day or set up a specific time to take the blood sample. To participate, contact Sara Pracht at prach011@umn.edu or 612-626-3574 or Andrea Eckert at aleckert@umn.edu or 612-625-3157.

To learn more about other clinical studies currently enrolling in the Veterinary Medical Center, visit the Clinical Investigation Center Web site at www.cvm.umn.edu/cic/current.

Need a home (top)

These Veterinary Medical Center blood donor dogs and cats need foster homes. For more information or to meet the animals, contact Beth Olmstead at johns547@umn.edu.

Dawson, a red and white neutered male 2-year-old fox hound. He is a little shy, and staff are working on his leash skills. Very sweet boy.

Mambo, a neutered male black shepherd/lab mix approximately 1 1/2 years old. He would make a great running partner and is recommended as a single dog. Very food and toy motivated.

Micetro, a 4-year-old neutered male feline blood donor. An orange and white domestic shorthair, Micetro is friendly, outgoing, and has been around other cats.

Mufasa, a neutered male grey and white domestic longhair cat that came to the VMC after being found with a can of bacon grease stuck on his head. He is a character, very inquisitive, and needs a foster home. Mufasa is 3 1/2 years old.
