Demolition of Veterinary Anatomy Building begins this week Preparation is underway for the demolition of the Veterinary Anatomy Building. Recent activities have included tree and plant removal, cordoning off of the area, removal of building windows, the abatement of hazardous materials, and installation of air-intake filters on the Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center, Veterinary Medical Center (VMC), The Raptor Center, and the Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine building. Security fencing has been installed around the building, utilities have been shut down, and a portion of the VMC parking lot between Veterinary Anatomy and the Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians. The actual building demolition will start early the morning of Wednesday, September 14, and work will continue through Monday, September 26. During that time, trucks, heavy equipment, and construction workers will be in the area for debris removal, backfilling, and grading of the space; installation of new sidewalks through the area; and curbing and asphalt in a portion of the VMC parking lot. Site cleanup and removal of the security fencing is scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, September 27, with work to install plants, grass, and benches in the area set to begin September 28. There will be noise and dust associated with the demolition project. The contractor is mitigating the dust problem by using water hoses during demolition and adding the filters on the building air intakes. To keep as much dust as possible out of the VMC, the north door to the building will be closed. The VMC will provide specific instructions to clients for parking and building access. Roof repair will be done on the Gabbert Raptor Center building during the same time period, which will also generate noise. Anyone with sensitivity to dust, molds, or odors, or who is immunocompromised, should avoid the area, particularly during the demolition and debris-removal stage (September 14-16). Use other entrances to the facility and avoid going outside in that area of the campus. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your supervisor, the Office of Academic and Student Affairs, the Office of Graduate Programs, a member of the CVM facilities team (Tim Gordon or Steen Erikson), or Paula Buchner. Dairy Appreciation Award presented to Ron Durst Dean Trevor Ames presented the first University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine Dairy Appreciation Award to Ron Durst at the Dairy Appreciation Luncheon at the Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center on August 29. The award recognized Ron for outstanding contributions to the dairy industry and for his support of education and research at the College of Veterinary Medicine. VMC kicks off Pet of the Game contest Winning pictures of pets displaying Gopher spirit featured at U of M football games The VMC has launched a photo contest that gives U of M Gopher Sports fans a chance to showcase their pets, express their Gopher spirit, and vote for their favorite pictures on Facebook. The Pet of the Game contest kicked off September 1 on the VMC’s official Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/umnvmc. The page allows the public to vote on the Pet of the Game for Gopher home football games, where finalists and winning Pet of the Game photos are displayed on the scoreboard. Pet-of-the-Game winners also receive a $100 VMC Gift Card and an entry in the Grand Prize Contest for four tickets to the Minnesota-Illinois game at TCF Bank Stadium on November 26, pre-game VIP field passes, and a $250 VMC gift card. He is expected to be at the College from approximately 10:55-11:20 a.m. for a whirlwind tour. Center for Teaching and Learning Opportunities The 2011-12 Internationalizing Teaching and Learning Cohort Program is now accepting proposals from University of Minnesota faculty and full-time instructional staff for internationalizing the curriculum. Applicants may apply for one of two programs: January 4-6, 2012, or June 6-8, 2012. Proposal deadline: October 14, 2011, 4 p.m. Complete program description, application materials and instructions are online at http://global.umn.edu/icc/itl_cohort.html. Do you want a safe, simple way to improve your course? An early term assessment of teaching/learning (between weeks three and eight) is one of the most recommended formative approaches to improve the educational environment for your students. Recent research by McGowan & Osguthorpe demonstrated that when faculty conduct early term assessments and make pedagogical adjustments, students perceive positive improvements in their learning as shown in teacher evaluations at the end of the semester. Learn more. Teaching seminars are semester-long, small-group, facilitated discussions that explore, in depth, a particular aspect of teaching. Participants are faculty and instructional staff who teach on the Twin Cities campus. The seminar topics for 2011-12 are: - Teaching with Public Engagement
- Designing your Learning Abroad Course
- Designing Courses to Improve Student Learning and Teacher Satisfaction

You can help important research efforts. For information about clinical studies currently enrolling in the Veterinary Medical Center, visit the Clinical Investigation Center Web site at www.cvm.umn.edu/cic/current. Needs a home (top) A young bro wn tabby cat needs a home. He's neutered, very friendly, has had no behavioral issues, and has gotten along well with other cats and dogs. He's FeLV and FIV negative. Contact Julie at johns233@umn.edu. Frank (also known as Hank or FurHank) is a 14-week-old male black dachshund/Labrador retriever cross. His mother is a black lab and his father is a dachshund, and it appears he received the best from both breeds. Cute and spunky, he will likely be a small/medium dog. He is excellent with people and other dogs and enjoys playing with kids. He has been socialized to many people and is doing very well on house-training. He sleeps and rides in a kennel with no problems. He’s snuggly and cuddly, too, and will sit on your lap, lie at your feet, or hunker down on your bed at night. He has received his first set of immunizations, deworming, and Frontline, but has not yet been neutered. He walks very well on a leash and trots along quite happily. He is free to a good home looking for a cuddly companion. Contact Marie Gramer at 612-624-7423 or grame003@umn.edu.
