College hosts annual Leman Swine Conference

The College hosted the 2012 Allen D. Leman Swine Conference at RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minnesota, September 15-18. One of the international swine community’s premier events, the Leman conference draws nearly 900 swine veterinarians, producers, research scientists, industry experts, and government officials from around the world. In addition to two full days of presentations and seminars on topics ranging from swine diseases to production to consumer issues, the conference included a two-day pre-conference program, trade show exhibits, keynote sessions, lectures, and scientific poster presentations. A video tribute to Al Leman was shown, and the Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award was presented to Dr. Julie Ménard, a swine practitioner consultant from Quebec. Learn more

Renovations completed in 135 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine

Renovations have been completed in 135 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine. Improvements include tiered seating with new tables and chairs, new carpet, updated electrical service, and a new projector screen. The room was officially open and back in use on September 13.

Technology transfer to be topic of Wednesday's Caffeinated Conservations

"Moving University Innovations From the Lab and Clinic to the Animal Health Market" will be the topic of the Caffeinated Conversations on Research discussion on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in 213 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. Sue Patow and Chad Kieper from the Office of Technology Commercialization will discuss how technology transfer works at the U, why researchers should care about commercialization, and how to best work with the Office for Technology Commercialization to promote innovations. Coffee and cookies will be served at 3:15 p.m. and the discussion will begin at 3:30 p.m.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

New!
RESPOND project update

This is the first in a series of regular updates on the RESPOND project.

In 2009, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded the University of Minnesota a five-year cooperative agreement for the RESPOND project, largely because of Minnesota's demonstrated ability to address global disease challenges through collaboration across health disciplines and academic, government, and private sectors. Now, a team from the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), School of Nursing, School of Public Health (SPH), and Medical School have a lead role in USAID's Emerging Pandemic Threats RESPOND project, building One Health capacity in emerging disease hotspots around the globe. Current efforts are focused on developing One Health university networks in Africa and Southeast Asia by bringing together schools of veterinary medicine, public health, nursing, and human medicine from different universities to address complex challenges like emerging diseases in human and animal populations.

This past week in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, faculty from the CVM, SPH, and School of Nursing joined counterparts from schools of veterinary medicine and public health from Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda to develop regional and national activities for the One Health Central and Eastern Africa network. As One Health networks are developed, other strengths are also being shared: faculty experience and expertise in collaborating across health disciplines, schools, and universities, as well as linking university service to government and private sectors. Benefits to the University include partnerships with individual faculty, schools, and universities to address global health challenges.

Together, these collaborative efforts are focusing on the development of One Health demonstration sites, training in risk analysis and experiential learning approaches, integrating disease surveillance across human and animal populations, synergizing One Health core competencies, developing One Health leadership skills, and more, with an eye toward long-term sustainable partnerships between universities and across countries. Stay tuned to learn more about exciting developments in One Health here at home and around the globe!

Michelson Prize & Grants offers research funding

Did you know that there’s $40 million in funding up for grabs as part of the prize and grant program Michelson Prize & Grants, where the ultimate goal of developing a single-dose, permanent, non-surgical sterilant for cats and dogs is currently underway? The foundation, based in Los Angeles, is seeking scientists of all disciplines to apply for these grants—and have a shot at earning the $25 million prize for developing the product. Found Animals Foundation will be holding a webinar on September 27 with the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership to give scientists and other representatives of academic institutions and biotechs the opportunity to learn about the available research funding. So far, 22 grants totaling over $9 million have been approved. Learn more at http://michelson.foundanimals.org/.
