President and Mrs. Kaler visit CVM University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler, his wife, Karen Kaler, and their dogs visited the College on September 19 as part of a tour of the St. Paul Campus. U of M photographer Patrick O'Leary's photos of the visit are online at http://photolab.umn.edu/2011/vet_med_tour/content/index_9.html. Board of Regents allocates additional funds to Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory The University of Minnesota Board of Regents has allocated an additional $1.6 million to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) for the fiscal year 2012-13 biennium. In its September 9 meeting, the Board of Regents approved new University President Eric Kaler’s budget proposal for the additional $50 million allocated to the University by the State Legislature during its 2011 Special Session. Through this decision, President Kaler demonstrated his commitment to supporting the VDL and the services it provides. Old Veterinary Anatomy Building demolished The Old Veterinary Anatomy building, one of the U's oldest buildings, is no more. Demolition took place on September 14. Originally completed in 1901, the building was the former home of College of Veterinary Medicine classrooms and offices, as well as an operating room, pharmacy, lab, and more. It was vacated in 1996 for structural reasons. Renovation was considered, but would have been cost-prohibitive. Landscape restorations are planned, and a new sidewalk and curbs will be installed this week. Curriculum review board presents progress report The CVM's curriculum review board distributed a six-month progress report on September 19. The report is online at http://blog.lib.umn.edu/rootk001/myblog/CURRICULUM%20REVIEW%20BOARD%20PROGRESS%20REPORT_09-19-11.pdf. Comments and questions may be submitted via Dr. Peggy Root Kustritz's blog at http://blog.lib.umn.edu/rootk001/myblog/.
CVM to migrate to Google starting in October; OIT to present Google Calendar, Gmail overview this week Over the past 18 months, University of Minnesota colleges have been transitioning from University e-mail services to Google e-mail. In addition to Google e-mail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and various Google apps are included as part of the new services. Academic Health Center (AHC) colleges had been delayed in the transition until legal issues were resolved with Google and patient data. Since CVM isn't encumbered with patient data as other AHC colleges, the decision was made to allow the CVM to transition to Google services immediately. A schedule will be developed for the College, outlining when each department will be allowed to migrate to Google starting in October. Migration will initially be on a volunteer basis. Faculty and staff will access www.umn.edu/dirtools and be presented with a Google Accounts Option. After accepting the "Google Apps for Higher Education User Agreement," a Google account will be created and access granted to Google functionality. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has various training tools available for University faculty and staff to learn more about Google services. Online training is available on the OIT Web site at https://sites.google.com/a/umn.edu/glearning/, and OIT has the following online resources to help get you ready for the transition: OIT Technology Training will also present two sessions of the Google Calendar and Gmail Overview course for CVM staff this week. Session 1: Google Calendar and Gmail Overview (GMC112CM) Date/Time: Tuesday, Sept. 27, 10-11 a.m. Location: 125 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine Registration Code: vb6uh2s Session 2: Google Calendar and Gmail Overview (GMC113CM) Date/Time: Thursday, Sept. 29, 10-11 a.m. Location: 125 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine Registration Code: typ02e6 To enroll, visit http://uttc.umn.edu/training/courses/description/?designator=GMC111. Click on the Custom tab on the right side of the page, enter the provided registration code, click the Enroll button, follow the registration steps, and submit. (Registration closes two business days before the class). OIT Technology Training is working to schedule two other sessions for second- and third-shift workers. Beth Johnson (joh02086@umn.edu) from AHC-IS is coordinating Google communications and schedules with the College. Questions may also be directed to Jim Promer at prome001@umn.edu. IT service disruption to occur October 1-2A scheduled Information Technology (IT) service disruption will occur beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, October 1, with services to be restored by noon Sunday, October 2. The interruption will occur when the Office of Information Technology shuts down its main data center to perform necessary maintenance, testing, and repairs of facility infrastructure. A full list of IT services that will be affected is available online. For more information, see IT service disruption. Fall faculty meeting set for October 6 The CVM's fall faculty meeting is set for Thursday, October 6, from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in 125 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine. Free flu vaccination clinic is October 6 The University of Minnesota is offering a free flu vaccination clinic in the Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine building on Thursday, October 6, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Online sign-up is now open; walk-ins are also welcome at any of the U of M flu vaccination clinics on a first-come, first-served basis. University of Minnesota flu vaccination clinics are open at no charge to University of Minnesota students, faculty, and staff (and their dependents) who are 18 years of age. For more information, visit www.bhs.umn.edu/public-health/flu.htm. Online auction underway to benefit The Raptor Center An online auction to benefit The Raptor Center is underway at www.WinningCause.org. In addition to gift cards for hotels, restaurants, theaters, sporting events, and weekend getaways, auction items include experiences like a day behind the scenes at The Raptor Center and a day canoeing on the St. Croix River with TRC cofounder Dr. Patrick Redig and Chris Heeter, founder of The Wild Institute. The auction ends at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 29. Library news Some library systems to remain available during October 1-2 data center outage A downtime period affecting many library systems and University-wide applications supported by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Saturday, October 1, with all systems expected to return to service by noon Sunday, October 2. Primarily intended for faculty, researchers, and graduate students engaged in scholarly writing and publishing, this workshop will provide a solid grounding in some of the elements of copyright law that are essential to scholarship, teaching, and research. Learn more about protections in the law for educators, and your rights as an author or creator. Discuss and debate with your peers about some of the burning questions in the field, and explore some entertaining and thought-provoking examples. No direct legal advice will be provided; this workshop is informational and educational in nature, and satisfies RCR continuing education awareness/discussion requirements. Date: Thursday, November 3. Time: 1-3 p.m. Place: Magrath Library Instruction Room (room 81), St. Paul. Register: http://z.umn.edu/caniusef
Registration now open for policy-making courseRegistration is now open for the "Local Policy Making for Animal Health, Public Health, and Food Systems" course scheduled for October 17-19. In this three-day local policy course, people interested in policy making at the state level will increase their understanding and develop skills on how to effectively engage the policy-making process. The program is built around a case study on raw milk for human consumption, a controversial topic in much of the U.S. The raw milk issue highlights tensions between individual choice and the role of government. The division of responsibilities between federal and state government for the prevention of zoonotic diseases will be explored. Participants will examine the development and implementation of state-level legislation and regulation, as well as the role of the judicial system in resolving disputes. The program will emphasize the diversity of perspectives influencing policy, including science, politics, and beliefs. Registration now open for 2012 Engaging Intergovernmental Organizations programRegistration for the "Engaging Intergovernmental Organizations" program in Geneva, Paris, and Rome is now open. In this week- long program, to be held March 3-9, 2012, participants will increase effectiveness for contributing to global program development, access a global network of leaders with backgrounds in animal health and food systems, and improve awareness of international policy-making and its role on food systems and animal health though visits to the World Trade Organization, World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, and World Organization for Animal Health.
