U of M one of four cooperating universities to receive $700,000 dairy grant The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, in collaboration with veterinary schools at the University of Illinois, University of Georgia, and Kansas State University, has received a grant for $700,000 to develop and implement a National Center of Excellence in Dairy Production Medicine Education for Veterinarians. The funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to be shared by the four partnering Universities. Read more VDL receives EDS certification The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has received effluent decontamination system (EDS) certification from the U of M’s biosafety officer and biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) program director. The effluent decontamination system handles all of the liquid waste that goes down the drains in the VDL’s BSL-3 lab. To use this system for waste that may contain BSL-3 organisms, it has to be certified. BSL-3 organisms are high-risk microorganisms with a true potential for infection by aerosols and in which the resulting disease may have serious or lethal consequences. Researchers in BSL-3 labs generally wear double gloves, respirators, and disposable surgical scrubs and gowns, and work in biological safety cabinets in isolated, negative-pressure containment rooms. After installation a year ago, and during validation trials, there were questions raised about excessive vibration produced during operation, and later about the integrity of some vent pipes that carried contaminated air. Extensive repairs were carried out to correct both problems. More recently, there was an alarm point created at the door to the EDS room so that any failure would be detected in ventilation of the space. “These deficiencies have now been corrected, and we are approved to use the system if the lab becomes activated due to a suspected disease outbreak requiring use of the BSL-3 lab,” says Ron Joki, senior scientist. Led by Ron Joki, the tour included a visit to the biohazardous waste disposal system (tissue digester). Photo by Sue Kirchoff | Visitors from Korea Zoonosis Research Institute tour VDL Ron Joki, senior scientist, hosted a tour of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for three visitors from Korea on October 6. Byeong Kirl Baek, director of the Korea Zoonosis Research Institute at Chonbuk National University, Jeonju, Korea; Sang Moo Kim, project manager, Nara Controls, Seoul, Korea; and Ji-Wong Kang, assistant project manager, Nara Controls, are building the new Korea Zoonosis Research Institute and were in the U.S., at least in part, to buy equipment for the facility. Gary Schmidt, account manager from Progressive Recovery, Inc. (PRI), the company that manufactured the VDL’s BSL-3 lab effluent decontamination system, brought them to the VDL to see the BSL-3 lab and other facilities. Dr. Jim Collins, director of the VDL, welcomed the group and Dr. Han Soo Joo, professor, accompanied them on the tour. | CVM invites students, staff, faculty, and dogs to march in Homecoming Parade The College is inviting students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends and their dogs to march in the University of Minnesota Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 21, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Parade participants will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the staging area at University Ave. and 12th Ave. The parade route begins at 15th Ave. and University Ave. and ends at Walnut St. and University Ave. Participants should wear maroon and gold and made sure their dog is on a leash. "Copyright Essentials for Authors and Creators" to be offered November 3 How many copyrights do you own? How long will they last? Can you post your paper online? Can someone else quote from your paper in their own? Primarily intended for faculty, researchers, and graduate students engaged in scholarly writing and publishing, this workshop will provide a solid grounding in some of the elements of copyright law that are essential to scholarship, teaching, and research. Learn more about protections in the law for educators, and your rights as an author or creator. Discuss and debate with your peers about some of the burning questions in the field, and explore some entertaining and thought-provoking examples. No direct legal advice will be provided; this workshop is informational and educational in nature, and satisfies RCR continuing education awareness/discussion requirements. Date: Thursday, November 3. Time: 1-3 p.m. Place: Magrath Library Instruction Room (room 81), St. Paul. Register: http://z.umn.edu/caniusef Registration open for policy-making course Registration is still open for the "Local Policy Making for Animal Health, Public Health, and Food Systems" course scheduled for October 17-19. In this three-day local policy course, people interested in policy making at the state level will increase their understanding and develop skills on how to effectively engage the policy-making process. The program is built around a case study on raw milk for human consumption, a controversial topic in much of the U.S. The raw milk issue highlights tensions between individual choice and the role of government. The division of responsibilities between federal and state government for the prevention of zoonotic diseases will be explored. Participants will examine the development and implementation of state-level legislation and regulation, as well as the role of the judicial system in resolving disputes. The program will emphasize the diversity of perspectives influencing policy, including science, politics, and beliefs. Registration open for 2012 Engaging Intergovernmental Organizations program Registration for the "Engaging Intergovernmental Organizations" program in Geneva, Paris, and Rome is now open. In this week-long program, to be held March 3-9, 2012, participants will increase effectiveness for contributing to global program development, access a global network of leaders with backgrounds in animal health and food systems, and improve awareness of international policy-making and its role on food systems and animal health though visits to the World Trade Organization, World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, and World Organization for Animal Health.
