You can give to any one of the more than 400 organizations that are part of the seven federations the fund drive highlights every year, or you can give to any U.S. tax-exempt charity of your choice. Pledge online at www.umn.edu/cfd. The University is awarding weekly prizes and grand prizes during the fund drive. To see the list of prizes, visit www1.umn.edu/cfd/prizes.html. The College will also award a prize: Once the final numbers are in, the department with the highest percentage of participation will receive $100, courtesy of Dean Trevor Ames.
Minnesota DNR to continue CWD testing with assistance of CVM students
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) surveillance of hunter-harvested deer for chronic wasting disease (CWD) will continue this month in an area of southern Minnesota near Pine Island, where captive elk infected with the disease were discovered in 2009. With the assistance of College of Veterinary Medicine students, DNR staff will be examining deer at stations in Kenyon, Lake City, Mantorville, Millville, Pine Island, Red Wing, Rochester, and Zumbrota. To date, CWD has not been found in a wild deer in Minnesota. More than 32,000 deer have been tested for CWD statewide since the disease was detected in Wisconsin in 2002. CWD is an infectious neurological disease that occurs in deer, elk, and moose and belongs to a group of diseases called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Chronic wasting disease is progressively fatal and has no known immunity, vaccine, or treatment.
Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences seeks applications for faculty position The Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department is seeking applications for a full-time, A-term (12 month), tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor in an area of infectious disease. Qualified applicants should provide a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and statement of research and teaching goals submitted electronically through the Office of Human Resources (www1.umn.edu/ohr/employment) under requisition number 168966. Fire Department to conduct training at lab facilities November 9-11 The St. Paul Fire Department will conduct training sessions at select St. Paul Lab facilities Tuesday - Thursday, November 9 - 11, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. As part of the training, a number of emergency vehicles (fire engines, hazmat vehicles, ambulances, etc.) will be at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Commonwealth and Gortner and the Plant Growth Facilities near Gortner and Dudley. It is not anticipated that the streets or building entrances will be closed. Needs a home (top)
Finn, a boxer mix
Finn (aka Finnegan Seamus McGee) is an energetic and playful 65-pound, 2 1/2 year-old neutered male. Finn is not getting along with the owner's older dog (who is picking on Finn), and after a year of working with them, the owner is looking for a new home for Finn. A boxer mix, most likely with some Rhodesian Ridgeback, Finn is mostly reddish-brown with a white chest and four white paws. He is eager to please, loves to run, and enjoys learning new things. One of his favorite places is the dog park.
Although Finn gets along very well with other dogs, he would probably be at his best in a home where he is the only dog. He also would do well in a home with a well-grounded dog to be his guide, since he is very much a follower and needs you and your dog to be the leaders. He has not had a lot of exposure to children or cats, so he would be best in a home with older children and without cats, although it is likely that he could be trained to get along with a cat. Finn knows the commands sit, stay, come, down, and heel, and he would love to show you his "jump around." He walks very well on a leash and is trained on an electronic collar and a Gentle Leader. He also knows how to run on a treadmill and likes to play hide-and-seek, but he is really only good at the "seek" part. If you are interested in Finn, please e-mail Erin at edickers@umn.edu.
