Tuesday is Election Day Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, and the University encourages everyone to vote. Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Minnesota law allows for employees to be absent from work on Election Day for the time necessary to vote. If you think you may miss work, be sure to let your supervisor know ahead of time. To find out where your polling place is located or how to register to vote on Election Day, see Minnesota Secretary of State Voter Information. Anonymous donor gives $225,000 for VetFASTBill Venne, chief development officer, reports that an anonymous donor has given $225,000 to the College of Veterinary Medicine to support the VetFAST program. The donors, a couple from rural Wisconsin, are grateful clients who read the Economic Contribution of the Veterinary Medicine Industry in Minnesota report and are concerned about the lack of veterinarians in rural areas. VetFAST scholarships support veterinary students committed to working in rural areas after graduation. Read more about VetFAST First Leman China Swine Conference draws 650 people from 10 countriesAfter more than a year of preparation, the first Leman China Swine Conference was a success. Held on October 15-16 at the Sofitel Hotel in Xi’an, China, the conference hosted 650 people representing over 100 companies from 10 countries. Learn more Veterinary Medicine Response Strike Team to meet November 14A meeting of the University of Minnesota Medical Reserve Corps Veterinary Medicine Response Strike Team is scheduled for Wednesday, November 14, from noon-12:50 p.m. in 125 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine. Hosted by the College of Veterinary Medicine and led by Dr. Larissa Minicucci, veterinary public health program director, the Veterinary Medicine Response Strike Team responds to local and national animal health-related emergencies and disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy. This meeting is designed to provide an overview of the U of M Medical Reserve Corps with a focus on activities, training events, and past and potential deployments of the strike team. Current team members and those interested in learning more about the team are welcome to attend. Pizza and beverages will be provided. Register by sending an e-mail to medicalreserve@umn.edu by November 12. Celebration of RK Anderson's life planned for December 5A celebration of Dr. R.K. Anderson’s life is planned for Wednesday, December 5, from 4:00-6:30 p.m. in the St. Paul Student Center Ballroom. The event is open to the public; everyone is welcome. One of the college's most accomplished faculty members, R.K. Anderson died on October 18 at the age of 90. Learn more Applications to DVM program top 1,000The College of Veterinary Medicine received 1,031 applications this year for fall 2013 admission, reports Karen Nelson, director of admissions. Nine new students were accepted into the VetFAST program, and four students started their DVM program through VetFAST this fall. Return to the GalápagosDr. Julia Ponder, executive director of The Raptor Center (TRC), headed to the Galapagos island of Pinzón last week to continue TRC's work with the Galápagos hawk—which will also help the Pinzón giant tortoise, an animal currently listed as "extinct in the wild" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Learn more Community Fund Drive participation reaches 20.58 percent As of November 2, the College of Veterinary Medicine's participation in the Community Fund drive was 20.58 percent, which compared to a total participation rate of 24.8 percent in 2011, 15.81 percent in 2010, and 21.58 percent in 2009. University-wide, the participation rate for 2012 was 26.47 percent. Within the Academic Health Center, the rate was 11.46 percent. 2012 prize winners included Cathy Carlson, Veterinary Population Medicine, who won a $10 gift card for Tony's Diner, and Kathy Stuebner, Clinical Investigation Center, who won a free shake for two from Potbelly. Food Policy Research Center offers funding opportunityThe Food Policy Research Center (FPRC) has announced a fall 2012 Request for Proposals. FPRC is requesting applications to fund innovative food and nutrition policy analyses. Preference will be given to transdisciplinary faculty teams who solicit broad input and examine policies from multiple perspectives such as public health, economics, and the environment. One-page letters of intent are due Nov. 15. For more information, see FPRC proposals. Nominate outstanding teachersNominations are being sought for the University's 2013 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Postbaccalaureate, Graduate, and Professional Education. Pending final approval by the Board of Regents, both faculty and P&A teachers are now eligible for the awards. The deadline for submitting nomination dossiers is Jan. 17. For more information, visit www.academic.umn.edu/provost/awards/gradprof.html.
Fan mail Dr. Erin Malone, assistant medical director, received a long testimonial from Sarah Travis, a dressage trainer in the west metro area, part of which included high praise for Dr. Nicolas Ernst, assistant clinical professor, and Kyla Awes, a Twin Cities-area certified animal chiropractor who provides chiropractic care at the Piper Clinic. "For many years, I have felt that Dr. Ernst is the best lameness vet I have ever used," Sarah wrote. "To be able to come to a single location and have two of the most knowledgeable and analytical doctors available work together in the evaluation and treatment of horses is priceless in the treatment of subtle physical problems before they interfere significantly with a horse’s training program or develop into more serious or chronic problems. Most importantly, both Dr. Awes and Dr. Ernst are true animal lovers, not interested in masking problems for short term success but in truly promoting the long-term well-being of the horses in their care."
