News conference gives update on police dog, announces new trauma center
On November 24, the Roseville Police Department and Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) held a joint news conference to provide an update on the condition of Major, a police dog being treated at the VMC, and introduce the VMC's new Animal Trauma Center.

Major, a nine-year-old German shepherd and seven-year member of the Roseville Police Department’s K9 Unit, was critically wounded November 12 while on duty. Roseville Police Chief Rick Mathwig gave an update on Major’s condition, and Major’s handler, Officer John Jorgenson, answered questions about Major’s injuries, recovery, and treatment. Drs. Lisa Powell and Nathan Rose provided a medical briefing that included details about Major’s injuries, treatment, and prognosis, and Dr. Kelly Hall discussed the new Animal Trauma Center and how it provides the public with the same lifesaving emergency trauma care Major received. A videographer from KARE-11 shot a video of Major's rehabilitation session, which was provided to other media outlets, and CVM Communications shared still photos with the Pioneer Press and Star Tribune.

University to be closed December 24-January 2
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus will be closed Friday, December 24, through Sunday, January 2, as a cost-savings measure. During this time, heat will be turned down and buildings will be locked but accessible through normal security. The closure period includes:

  • Two weekends, December 25-26 and January 1-2
  • Official University holidays on December 24 and 31
  • A floating holiday on December 27
  • Three furlough days, December 28-30, for civil service and bargaining unit employees

With the exception of notified staff, civil service and bargaining unit employees will not be expected to work and will not be paid for December 28-30. Faculty and "P&A" staff will be available to work but encouraged to work off-site, if possible. The three unpaid, mandatory furlough days will affect paychecks on January 12. Employees who are required to work during the furlough must complete a furlough request form and arrange alternate furlough dates with their supervisor.

Please note that the closure period includes one payday on Wednesday, December 29. For those on direct deposit, paychecks will be deposited as usual. For those not on direct deposit, paychecks will be mailed on December 27 to home addresses.

Watch your inbox for more information on the furlough, talk with your supervisor about impacts specific to your work group, and check the Human Resources' online Q&A for more information. For planning tips from the Academic Health Center, visit Planning for the Year-End University Closure.

Reminder: Academic employees have floating holiday
A personal holiday has been added for academic employees on the Twin Cities and Rochester campuses to bring their total up to 11 holidays, consistent with other employee groups and other campuses. The personal holiday for academic staff (on the Twin Cities and Rochester campuses only) for fiscal year 2011 must be taken between December 23, 2010, and January 17, 2011. If not used in that time period, it is lost. This holiday cannot be banked or utilized outside of this time period. The specific dates will change in future years consistent with the academic calendar. This personal holiday applies to those whose terms and conditions of employment are covered by academic, graduate assistant, or professionals-in-training policies. Approval and tracking of this holiday is the responsibility of the local unit.
