Rozmiarek, Harry


Dr. Harry Rozmiarek

In 2005, Harry Rozmiarek, class of 1962, was appointed as the U.S. representative to the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science. This renewable five-year appointment was made by the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research, a branch of the National Academy of Science, and is to represent the United States in matters of international research and welfare in animals.

A leader in the specialty of laboratory animal medicine, Rozmiarek is past president of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine), and the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners. His accomplishments in laboratory animal medicine and science have been recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association with the Charles River Prize in 1996 and by the AALAS with the Griffin Award in 1994.

After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Rozmiarek completed a master’s degree and residency in laboratory animal science in 1969 and a Ph.D. in immunology in 1976 from the Ohio State University, where he then served as professor of laboratory animal medicine and director of University Laboratory Animal Resources through 1986. In 1987, he joined the University of Pennsylvania as university veterinarian and professor and director of University Laboratory Animal Resources.

Rozmiarek retired from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004, but continues to serve as emeritus professor and special consultant to the vice provost for research as well as director of laboratory animal medicine at the Fox Chase Cancer Center. He serves on the board of directors of the Public Responsibility for Medicine and Research, the vice chairman of the board of the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation for Laboratory Animal Care International, the board of directors of the DVB/AALAS, and numerous other positions of leadership in organizations representing laboratory animal medicine and science.
