Introduction

In conjunction with the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the College of Veterinary Medicine is working to develop a model of Dairy Best Practices (DBP) for drug use on dairies. Our mission is to produce a system of best practices for dairy veterinary practice that helps veterinarians properly oversee the use of drugs on dairies in both a medical and regulatory context and to assure compliance with the current legal standards surrounding the use and distribution of prescription and extra-label drugs on dairy farms. The general framework for this project was approved by a MVMA resolution in February of 2001. The goals of this DBP initiative include:

  • Protecting the safety of food at all times
  • Assuring drugs are used in the proper animals at the proper time
  • Promoting the welfare of animals on dairy farms
  • Contributing to dairy producers interests in operating their dairy farm
  • Affirming the legal and necessary role of the veterinarian in overseeing the use of prescription and extra-label drugs
