Introduction
In conjunction with the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the College of Veterinary Medicine is working to develop a model of Dairy Best Practices (DBP) for drug use on dairies. Our mission is to produce a system of best practices for dairy veterinary practice that helps veterinarians properly oversee the use of drugs on dairies in both a medical and regulatory context and to assure compliance with the current legal standards surrounding the use and distribution of prescription and extra-label drugs on dairy farms. The general framework for this project was approved by a MVMA resolution in February of 2001. The goals of this DBP initiative include:
Protecting the safety of food at all times
Assuring drugs are used in the proper animals at the proper time
Promoting the welfare of animals on dairy farms
Contributing to dairy producers interests in operating their dairy farm
Affirming the legal and necessary role of the veterinarian in overseeing the use of prescription and extra-label drugs
