Current Status

The MVMA Food Animal Pharmacuetical Committee and the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine have developed VCPR forms to aid in the collection of information from a farm and validate the VCPR. The VCPR materials include a herd information form and forms for four different areas of the farm: clinical disease, mastitis, reproduction, and youngstock. Pilot clinics have tested VCPR materials and concepts in actual practice environments. Currently, computer software is being developed to link protocol writing development and the creation of written prescriptions. The software will be field tested with the pilot clinics and other interested veterinarians.

Similar to Minnesota DBP, the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) is working on developing models to help practitioners deal with the legal issues surrounding the prescription of drugs. The Minnesota DBP is working with the WVMA’s Best Practices Task Force to share ideas and approaches to this issue
