U of M Veterinary College Faculty to Present Equine Medicine at Horse Expo

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (April 6, 2006) - The University of Minnesota Equine Center is dedicated to advancing the health, well-being, and performance of the horse. At the 2006 Minnesota Horse Expo, the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and the Equine Center faculty will present on a variety of topics important to the horse community. All presentations will be held in the Ramberg Building located on the Minnesota State Fair Grounds.

Friday, April 28 5-6 p.m. What to do when your horse colics, and what to expect. Dr. Jenner will discuss the signs of colic, prevention, treatment, and what do to if your horse gets it. Dr. Florien Jenner
  6-7 p.m. Why Won't My Mare Get (and Stay) Pregnant? Dr. Madill will discuss conception rates and mares that have odd cycles, don't get pregnant, and lose a confirmed pregnancy. Dr. Scott Madill

  1-2 p.m. Laminitis, also known as "Founder." Dr. Barnes will discuss the signs of laminitis, cause, treatment, and how to minimize the risk of catching this disease. Dr. Amy Barnes
  2-3 p.m. Breathless: Heaves in Horses. Dr. Ward will teach how to recognize heaves and how to help your horse cope and breathe easier. Dr. Christie Ward
  3-4 p.m. Snotty Noses - What Could It Be? Dr. Valberg will teach you the causes and learn how to solve the mystery of snotty noses.  Dr. Stephanie Valberg
Sunday, April 30 1-2 p.m. Treating Equine Sarcoids: A New Option for an Old Problem. Dr. Malone will discuss the result of a new drug treatment that appears to be effective against equine sarcoids. Dr. Erin Malone 
  2-3 p.m. Breathless: Heaves in Horses. Dr. Ward will teach how to recognize heaves and how to help your horse cope and breathe easier.  Dr. Christie Ward

While you're at the Horse Expo, don't miss the opportunity to tour the Veterinary Medical Center Large Animal Hospital, meet equine veterinarians, and learn more about the services offered. The Veterinary Medical Center is located just west of the fairgrounds. Each tour is limited to 50 people and tour passes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Buses will pick up and drop off participants at the bus stop located by the Horse Expo entrance on Liggett Street. Buses will depart the Horse Expo bus stop at the following times: 

  • Friday, April 28: 2:30 p.m., 4:00 p.m, and 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 29: 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.
