The award is in recognition of Hueston’s achievements in the advancement of human health through veterinary epidemiology and public health. Created in 1964 by the American Veterinary Epidemiology Association, the award is sponsored by the Hartz Mountain Corporation.

Hueston has advised governments in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada on how to prevent and contain bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease.
