Equine specialists join U of M Veterinary Medical Center

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (Dec. 13, 2004) - Equine veterinarians Florien Jenner and Colin Mitchell have joined the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center as clinical assistant professors in the large-animal surgery division.

" We are pleased to have Dr. Jenner and Dr. Mitchell on our team, giving us strength in all facets of teaching, research, and clinics," said Erin Malone, D.V.M., Ph.D., large animal surgery division head. "Client demand for both of them is already high, and we are really enjoying their energy and enthusiasm."

Dr. Jenner was previously a resident in large animal surgery at New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, which has one of the largest equine surgical faculties in the world. Born in Austria, she received her veterinary medical degree in 1999 from the Ludwig-Maximillian University School of Veterinary Medicine in Munich, Germany.

" Dr. Jenner helps balance our team by providing particular strength in orthopedics and racehorse problems, such as lameness and respiratory conditions," Malone said. "She is enthusiastic and interested in all facets of clinics. Her zeal for helping our patients and their owners is apparent."

Dr. Mitchell is a graduate of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was previously a resident in large animal surgery at the Veterinary Medical Center.

" We were very happy to retain Dr. Mitchell after he completed his residency," said Dr. Malone. "We have taken his strengths in colic research and soft-tissue surgery and put him in charge of our emergency service. This will enable us to continue to provide exceptional after-hours care without exhausting the entire team. However, client demand for his services is high and he will continue to have some time on daytime clinics, as well."

" With their expertise in equine surgery, Doctors Jenner and Mitchell will be a great asset to the Veterinary Medical Center and the College, as well as our new Equine Center," commented Jeffrey Klausner, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. The College is well underway toward reaching its goal of raising $10 million to construct a new Equine Center on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. The center will include 50,000 square feet dedicated to equine care, health, and performance. Groundbreaking is tentatively planned for mid-2005.
