Dean candidate interviews continue; three presentations now online
Two candidates for the position of dean of the College, Dr. Douglas Freeman and Dr. Howard Gelberg, were interviewed last week. Three candidates' presentations can now be viewed online via Breeze:
The link to Dr. D. Paul Lunn's presentation is to be determined. The remaining candidate, current interim dean Dr. Trevor Ames, will be interviewed Jan. 29-31. Seminar and reception times will be published in CVM This Week (see the calendar) and distributed via e-mail.
National Center for Food Protection and Defense moves to Veterinary Science
The National Center for Food Protection and Defense (NCFPD) has moved from the Minneapolis campus to the CVM's Veterinary Science building. Their new address:
144 Veterinary Science Building
1971 Commonwealth Ave
St. Paul, MN 55108
The NCFPD's phone number, 612-624-2458, and e-mail address, ncfpd@umn.edu, have not changed.
One-minute preceptor to be topic of Friday Seminar on Teaching
How do you teach students clinical reasoning skills efficiently in a real-time clinical setting? Most clinical teaching takes place in a setting where time is at a premium. The five microskills of the One Minute Preceptor teaching model enable teachers to effectively assess, instruct, and provide feedback more efficiently. Don't miss the the CVM Seminar on Teaching, "One Minute Preceptor," to be led by Drs. Karyn Baum and JoAnn Wood of the Medical School on Friday, Jan. 25, from noon-1 p.m. in 213 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. Refreshments will be served.
Alumni news--
CVM alumni lead organization that trains first responders in animal rescue
CVM alumni Dr. Janet Olson and Dr. Karina Burger of the class of 1996 lead Basic Animal Rescue Training (BART), a nonprofit organization that trains firefighters and other first responders to rescue domestic animals in emergency situations. Based in New Brighton, Minnesota, BART teaches restraint and handling of pets, horses, and livestock, as well as patient assessment, first aid, and CPR for companion animals.
BART classes are taught by volunteer veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and veterinary students. The departments undergoing training receive an emergency medical kit containing all the materials and supplies covered. More than 1,600 emergency response personnel have taken the training since the program began in 2004.
Endorsed by the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, BART is supported by charitable donations and grants from individuals and organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, Minnesota Horse Council, Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association Foundation, and Pfizer Animal Health. For more information about BART, visit http://basicanimalrescuetraining.org/
New veterinary advocacy association formed
The Humane Society of the United States and Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights have formed a new veterinary advocacy association, Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA). HSVMA will give veterinarians, veterinary students, and veterinary technicians an opportunity to participate in animal welfare programs, including disaster response; expanded hands-on animal care; spaying and neutering; and advocacy for legislative, corporate and veterinary medical school reforms. For more information, go to http://www.hsus.org/press_and_publications/press_releases/hsvma_011408.html
