Jaime Modiano
Modiano's research discovers genetic cancer link between humans and dogs
Research conducted by Dr. Jaime Modiano
has found that humans and dogs share more than friendship and companionship -- they also share the same genetic basis for certain types of cancer. Furthermore, the research suggests that because of the way the genomes have evolved, getting cancer may be inevitable for some humans and dogs. See the news release.

Staff and students rally for Support the U Day
Freshman veterinary students Andrew Bean, Anna Michael, Andrea Astudillo, Kaite Zewers, and Jessie Radtke, accompanied by Ian Rubinoff, president of the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association, and Jan Williams, government relations, joined hundreds of other students, faculty, and staff from all campuses for a rally in support of the University's capital bonding at the state capitol on February 20. The CVM team contacted Representatives Margret Anderson Kellihor, Paul Thissen, Mindy Greiling, and Ronald Shimanski and Senators Ellen Anderson, Dan Larson, and John Marty; Topics of discussion included the rising cost of tuition, the need for a veterinary student loan forgiveness program in Minnesota, and the issue of breed-specific ban legislation. Photo by Patrick O'Leary

A friendly reminder from the Collegiate Pet Committee
The Collegiate Pet Committee has noticed that the area between the Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine building and the Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center has considerable animal waste building up on the lawn. This gives a bad first impression to people visiting the College and is unpleasant for people who must move between the buildings.

People who bring their animals to work/school are reminded that they must clean up after their pets. Hospitalized animals that might be brought outside to relieve themselves must be cleaned up after as well. To facilitate this, scoopers, bags, and trash cans have been placed by the Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine door and other areas around the College. The small bags are for use in the immediate area around the College grounds, so please do not take extras for later use. If the bag holder is empty, please contact a member of the Pet Committee to get the container refilled.

Remember that the University of Minnesota in general prohibits pet dogs on campus. CVM personnel and students are privileged to bring their pets to work/school with them only after agreeing to abide by the rules and policies set forth by the Collegiate Pet Policy. You may access this policy at https://intranet.ahc.umn.edu/petpolicy/index.html . Among other things, the policy states that animals must be leashed at all times, animals are not allowed in classrooms (and a few other areas), and all doggie refuse must be cleaned up. Respecting these policies will allow us to continue to enjoy the comradeship of our dogs in the workplace.

A big thank-you from the Pet Committee to the CVM kennel crew who cleaned up the area between the Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine and the Pomeroy Center on Febrary 26! It was much appreciated!
