Nominations sought for interim dean
In an April 4 e-mail, Frank B. Cerra, senior vice president for health sciences, asked CVM faculty, staff, and students to forward their nominations for interim dean -- along with the rationale for the nomination -- to him at cerra001@umn.edu by 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 20. Dr. Cerra will put together a list of final candidates, ask for comments, and make a final selection and appointment. He would like to complete this process by mid-May so there is some overlap between that selection and the departure of Dean Klausner, who will be leaving the College effective July 1.
Dr. Cerra will also be organizing a national search for a permanent dean. That process will be initiated as soon as possible but will not be completed by July.
University to take a lead role in battle against bird flu
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, part of the National Institutes of Health, has named the University of Minnesota as one of six sites across the country to establish a Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance. The center will receive $22.5 million over seven years to focus on surveillance of avian influenza viruses and to provide the federal government with information and public health strategies for controlling the impact of an influenza pandemic.
"We will be keeping our finger on the pulse of avian influenza," said Dr. Marguerite Pappaioanou, principal investigator and professor of infectious disease and epidemiology at the School of Public Health. To learn more, go to http://www.sph.umn.edu/
College Cleanup Day a monumental success --
CVM sends 12 tons to recycling center
Last week's College Cleanup Day evolved into several days due to the overwhelming amount of obsolete equipment and furnishings identified throughout the College. The CVM sent three truckloads -- more than 12 tons -- of surplus items to the U of M Recycling Center last week, with Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine scheduled for final cleaning on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Facilities manager Ed Kosciolek thanks everyone who participated in Cleanup Day in preparation for the AVMA accreditation team visit April 14-19.
Pet cleanup day planned for Tuesday
The Pet Committee has rescheduled pet cleanup day for Tuesday, April 10, at noon, weather permitting. Meet in the Small Animal Hospital lobby to receive gloves, plastic bags, and an assigned area. The cleanup is expected to take no more than 20-30 minutes of your time. Get outside and beautify the College grounds at the same time! Participants will be entered into a drawing for three Veterinary Student Supply gift certificates.
Spring Awards Ceremony is April 26
The annual College of Veterinary Medicine Awards Ceremony will be held on Thursday evening, April 26, beginning at 6 p.m. in the North Star Ballroom of the St. Paul Student Center. The evening will begin with a reception for students, faculty, and scholarship sponsors, followed by the presentation of the awards at 6:30.
During the ceremony, D.V.M. students and faculty will be honored for their achievements this past year. More than 60 scholarships will be presented to veterinary students. The evening will conclude with the presentation of teaching awards for the 2006-07 academic year, including the Carl Norden Distinguished Teaching Award as selected by students enrolled in the D.V.M. program. All students and faculty are invited to attend. Formal invitations to students being honored and to faculty are being distributed to mailboxes. Please return your RSVP card to the Academic and Student Affairs Office by Friday, April 20.
A friendly reminder--
VMC must charge faculty, staff, and students for pet care
CVM faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to bring their pets to the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) for care, but are asked to remember that all consultations must be documented in the medical record and charged for according to the fee schedule. This includes all informal consultations for staff, clinicians, and students.
If you bring your animal to the VMC for care, their vaccinations will be administered through General Practice. The treatment room will no longer provide this service for employees. Please call 626-VETS (8387) to schedule an appointment with General Practice.
Wanted: Central Veterinary Conference Proceedings
The Veterinary Medical Library is missing copies of the Central Veterinary Conference Proceedings from years 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. Should anyone have a copy of any of these to donate to the Library, please bring them by! A bookplate honoring your donation will be placed in the items.
