Celebrate Beautiful U day with lunch on Thursday
Celebrate Beautiful U Day with a zero-waste lunch on Thursday, April 17, from 11:30 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. at the St. Paul Student Center and receive a compact florescent light bulb. For a list of Beautiful U events and grant recipients go to www.buday.umn.edu/index.html

National Center for Food Protection and Defense to host April 21 open house
The National Center for Food Protection and Defense will host an open house on Monday, April 21, from 3-6 p.m. Located in 144 Veterinary Science, the center will offer visitors an opportunity to learn more about the work of this Homeland Security Center of  Excellence and its research opportunities. Refreshments will be served.

Spring Awards Ceremony is April 24
The annual College of Veterinary Medicine Awards Ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 24, beginning at 6 p.m. in the North Star Ballroom of the St. Paul Student Center.  During the ceremony, D.V.M. students and faculty will be honored for their achievements this past year and more than 60 scholarships will be presented to veterinary students. The evening will begin with a 6 p.m. reception for students, faculty, and scholarship sponsors, followed by the presentation of the awards at 6:30 p.m. The evening will conclude with the presentation of teaching awards for the 2007-08 academic year, including the Carl Norden Distinguished Teaching Award as selected by students enrolled in the D.V.M. program.

All students and faculty are invited to attend. Formal invitations to the faculty and students being honored are being distributed to mailboxes. Please return your RSVP card to the Academic and Student Affairs Office by Friday, April 18.

Senior Pig Roast set for April 25
Join the Class of 2008 in celebrating the end of their D.V.M. program. The annual senior class pig roast will be held on Friday evening, April 25. The fun begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Livestock Pavilion on Carter Avenue, with serving beginning at 5 p.m. Students and guests, staff, and faculty are welcome to stop by for food, fun, and fellowship and to bid the Class of 2008 farewell.

Class of 2008 Commencement Ceremonies to be held May 3
Commencement Ceremonies for spring 2008 graduates of the College of Veterinary Medicine will be held on Saturday, May 3, beginning at 7 p.m. at Northrop Memorial Auditorium on the Minneapolis East Bank campus. Graduates of the doctor of veterinary medicine, master of science, doctor of philosophy, and master of public health programs will be awarded their degrees. Renowned primatologist Jane Goodall will deliver the commencement address. After the commencement ceremony, she will do a book signing at Northrop. Faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend both events, which are free and open to the public.

Enterprise Financial System project update
Enterprise Financial System (EFS) team members are now testing a new system that will replace the U's CUFS and Financial Forms Nirvana systems. About 2,800 University employees across the state will undergo training this spring to master the system, which is scheduled to launch July 1.

A thank-you from the Pet Committee
The Pet Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in Pet Cleanup Day on April 4. The grounds looked much more presentable for the Open House after your labors! Eight gift certificates to Veterinary Student Supply were awarded. Christopher Eaton and Steve Tousignant won $20 gift certificates and Aric Frantz, Kaitlyn Inhoff, Danielle Jansen, Laura Lancieri, Sara Pracht, and Danielle Renstrom won $10 gift certificates.

USDA officially downgrades Minnesota's bovine TB status
On April 9,
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that it had officially downgraded Minnesota’s bovine tuberculosis (TB) status from Modified Accredited Advanced to Modified Accredited. The drop in status, required by the USDA Code of Federal Regulations, follows the discovery of four additional infected herds within the last 12 months and will require Minnesota cattle producers to conduct additional testing when shipping animals out of state. More information is available on the Minnesota Board of Animal Health Web site.

Responsible animal lover wanted
A St. Paul couple is looking for a responsible animal lover to take care of their pets and house while they are on vacation. They have two dogs and two cats. In addition to the regular pet needs (food, fresh water, daily walks for the dogs and snuggles) one of the cats requires injections every other day.
