Dr. Trevor Ames becomes interim dean;
Farewell reception for Dr. Jeff Klausner is Thursday
Dr. Tom Molitor named interim chair of Veterinary Population Medicine;
Dr. Sagar Goyal is vice chair
Dr. Trevor Ames becomes interim dean of the College today, taking over for Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, who has resigned to become president and chief executive officer of the Animal Medical Center in New York City. A farewell reception for Dr. Klausner is planned for Thursday, June 21, from 3:30-6 p.m. in the Cargill Building at 1500 Gortner Avenue.
Effective today, Dr. Tom Molitor will take over for Dr. Ames as interim department chair of the Veterinary Population Medicine Department; Dr. Sagar Goyal will become vice chair. This administrative structure was decided upon based on input from Drs. Molitor and Goyal and others in the department. In general, Dr. Molitor will focus on the research and teaching missions of the department, and Dr. Goyal will focus on the service missions and fill in for Dr. Molitor when needed.
Ed Kosciolek retires
Ed Kosciolek, facilities manager, retired on June 15 after 33 years with the University, 26 of which he worked at the College. He and his wife, Sandie, will be making their new home in beautiful Las Cruces, New Mexico. We wish them all the best!
A message from Ed
Many thanks to all of you who graciously attended my retirement reception. I was overwhelmed by the turnout and at the same time delighted to see many friends from the CVM as well as from the larger University community. Unfortunately, given the size of the crowd, I was unable to individually thank each of you for your participation. Please accept my thanks now, and I offer my best wishes to you all. The College continues to achieve great success because of your hard work.
Sincerely,
Ed Kosciolek
Volunteers sought for veterinary exhibits at Minnesota State Fair
During the Minnesota State Fair, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) and the College work together to raise awareness of veterinary medicine. This year's fair runs from August 23-September 3. Volunteers are needed at the Surgery Suite to perform and moderate spays and neuters (shifts are 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 12-5 p.m.). This public demonstration educates the public on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets.
Volunteers are also needed at the Miracle of Birth Center to answer questions and help with the birthing process (shifts are 9 a.m.-1 p.m., 1-5 p.m., and 5-9 p.m.). This exhibit helps educate the public about food animal production and the roles veterinarians play in this important industry. More than 203 animals were born last year during the 10-day run of the fair.
Please consider volunteering and sharing the importance of veterinary medicine in our communities. For more information or to volunteer, contact the MVMA at 651-645-7533.
AAH-ABV and WALTHAM call for research proposals
The American Association of Human-Animal Bond Veterinarians (AAH-ABV) and WALTHAM are collaborating on a research program exploring the nature of the human-animal bond. The organizations are issuing a call for proposals for investigations into areas of human-animal interaction that either have not been explored or that need further examination. They are particularly interested in questions regarding the impact of pets on the physical well-being of children (e.g. immunity, allergy, obesity), how pets affect the quality of life of elderly people, and how culture affects the human-animal bond.
An award of up to $20,000 will be given to support well-conceived and relevant proposals addressing human-animal bond issues. Proposals must be submitted by September 1; the award will be announced by October. Research must be completed within two years of receiving the award. For more information and to download an application form, go to www.aahabv.org.
The AAH-ABV provides education, resources, and support that enhance the ability of veterinarians to create positive and ethical relationships among people, animals, and their environment. The WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition is a state-of-the-art pet care facility in the United Kingdom dedicated to progressing the health and welfare of pets worldwide.
