Students, residents, and faculty mobilize to clean up storm damage at TMF
Emerald Dairy, one of the dairies affiliated with the College's Transition Management Facility (TMF), sustained major storm damage last week. About 30 students, residents, and faculty members, including Drs. John Deen, John Fetrow, Sandra Godden, and Larrisa Minnicucci, mobilized to help clean up.
"We did a lot of cleanup, and having lots of people made a huge difference," said Dr. John Fetrow, professor, Veterinary Population Medicine. "We set up 300-plus calf hutches to replace 300 that got blown away. With the amount of destruction, it was amazing how little loss of animal life there was. Cleanup and reconstruction will take a while."
The TMF is a public-private partnership in dairy management and education in which the College has affiliated with Baldwin and Emerald Dairies in western Wisconsin to develop an education and research facility to train veterinary students, provide continuing education for veterinarians and education programs for dairy professionals, and conduct advanced clinical and applied research.
The first cows moved into the TMF in January 2002. Today, the TMF houses approximately 400 cows through their dry period (the time from the end of lactation until the next calving) and through the two weeks after calving. Between 8 and 10 cows calve in the facility each day.
