College news (top)

Rep. Betty McCollum visits College
On August 28, the College hosted Representative Betty McCollum, her legislative director, Emily Lawrence of the Washington, D.C. office, and her legislative associate, Joe Carlile of the Minnesota office. Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Director Jim Collins toured the group through the laboratory and discussed funding needs for special equipment and support for diagnostic services. Shaun Kennedy, director for the Post-Harvest Food Protection and Defense project, demonstrated a food contamination scenario with the aid of a software program that showed the effect on the food distribution system and population. Interim Dean Trevor Ames showed the group the new Leatherdale Equine Center, discussing the public/private partnerships and community programming that will be offered in the new center, as well as the service and research focus of the equine program. University Federal Relations staff Channing Riggs and Dan Gilchrist, and Jan Williams, CVM communications director, accompanied the group.

AFSCME strike continues
A strike by nearly one-third of about 3,150 University health care, technical, and clerical workers represented by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) continued into its second week, with no schedule for additional negotiations. The issue is wages, with the union maintaining that the University's proposed 2.25 and 2.5 percent raises don't keep up with inflation. University officials say that when service anniversary step increases are considered, the offers are fair. More information is available at www1.umn.edu/ohr/er/negotiations/index.html

CVM Seminars on Teaching start Friday
T
he CVM Seminar on Teaching will be offered every other Friday this fall starting Friday, September 21. The first speaker will be Sehoya Cotner, assistant professor in the College of Biological Sciences, who will present "A Slacker's Guide to In-Class Assessment" from noon-12:50 p.m. in 215 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. Refreshments will be served.

Building successful working relationships with leaders to be topic of Oct. 5 seminar
Dee Anne Bonebright, a consultant with the Organizational Effectiveness division of Human Resources, will discuss building successful working relationships at a professional development seminar scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5, at noon in 280 Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Building rapport with peers, your supervisor, and administration is important to a vital and successful career at the U, no matter what position you're in. In this session, participants will look at John Maxwell's nine key principles for building successful working relationships with leaders.

Hill's College Feeding Program updates

  • The online ordering system is in full swing. While the database coordinators are still adding new features and improving the functionality of the Web site, the new system has been working relatively well.

  • A few people have expressed concern that the Hill's program no longer has old orders on file for pickup at a later distribution date. The coordinators discussed this and decided to keep old orders on file for one month. This will be effective starting with the October distribution.

  • Due to space limitations and the increase in program participation since the inception of online ordering, the program will no longer be able to honor requests for extra food. Starting with September distribution, the coordinators will have a list of extra food that will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the extra food is gone, it's gone, and the coordinators will not distribute food that may belong to someone else. (Please note that they do not order extra prescription food or extra canned food.) If you have placed an order and wish to buy extra food on top of that, the combination of these cannot exceed the 60-pound limit for dogs or 30-pound limit for cats.

To order food, go to https://www.summationdata.com/hpn. If you have any questions about the Hill's College Feeding Program, e-mail Jaime Nett at nett0049@umn.edu or Alisha Leonard at leona156@umn.edu.
