Also part of the festivities will be a silent auction featuring paintings by Hercules. Faculty, staff, students, and the general public are invited to attend. Take Gortner Avenue north to Dudley Avenue, turn right, and go three blocks. The Equine Center will be on your left at 1801 Dudley Avenue.
This is National Veterinary Technician Week
October 14-20 is National Veterinary Technician Week, an annual event recognizing veterinary technicians for their contributions to the animal health-care team. "Our team cares for your animals" is the theme of this year's event. For more information, visit http://www.navta.net/news_events/index.php
Community Fund Drive underway
The University's annual Community Fund drive began Oct. 1 and continues through Oct. 31. This year's goal is a participation rate of 40 percent and a total of $1.25 million for state charities. View the welcome from cochairs Steve Cawley, vice president and CIO for information technology, and Billie Wahlstrom, vice provost for distributed education and instructional technology, at Minnesota charities count on U.

Respectful Workplace training is scheduled for 9-11 a.m. Tuesday in 280 Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. New employees are required to attend this training. To sign up, contact Helen Pederson at 624-8673 or h-pede1@umn.edu
Drs. Trevor Ames and Jim Collins join University officials on visit to Willmar
On Oct. 10, Interim Dean Trevor Ames and Dr. Jim Collins, director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL), joined University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks, several members of the University's Board of Regents, and officials from the Academic Health Center, in Willmar, Minn., to discuss partnerships between the University of Minnesota and Willmar organizations in areas such as --
Disease control. The VDL is working closely with the poultry industry, whose processing plants are concentrated in the Willmar area, to provide diagnostic testing for two serious diseases, turkey cellulitis and poultry enteritis, which are becoming a national problem. The VDL is working to mitigate these economically devastating diseases.
Information resources. Through its partnership with MinnWest, a biotech startup, the VDL is providing information that supports the company's ability to select products.
Tourism. The VDL is working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to protect the area's economic interests in the hunting industry by offering statewide testing for TB in deer, which contributes to identifying any health issues and protecting human health. In addition, the VDL is conducting testing for viral hemorrhagic septicemia, a deadly infectious fish disease. This disease will have serious impact on the fish population if it is introduced into Minnesota lakes. The best way to prevent and minimize the disease in fish populations is to contain the disease by testing fish. The VDL will be on the front lines of surveillance of this deadly disease.
Jobs. Through the VDL's partnership with the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, the Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory in Willmar provides jobs and contributes to the economic viability of the area.
The unique partnerships between the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and Minnesota's communities, such as Willmar, continue to have an important impact on the health of animals and people through Minnesota and the nation. Their work will continue to protect Minnesota's $21 billion animal agriculture industry from serious diseases by providing rapid diagnosis of animal diseases, identifying emerging disease, developing new diagnostic methods, and training diagnosticians and veterinarians.
Dean's Circle dinner honors major donors
The College's annual Dean's Circle dinner, held at McNamara Center on Oct. 2, honored major donors. Speakers included Dr. Trevor Ames, interim dean, who welcomed the group, Dr. Frank Cerra, senior vice president for health sciences, Dr. Dan Feeney, professor, and Dr. Mike Henson, assistant clinical professor. A special tribute to Dr. Pat Redig, professor and cofounder of The Raptor Center, featured comments from Professor Emeritus Harrison “Bud” Tordoff, William Heinrich of The Peregrine Fund in Boise, Idaho, and TRC volunteers Martha Williams, Marcia Wolkerstorfer, and Kathy Zonne.
Housing sought for Brazilian exchange students
Need a little excitement in your life? Want to make a difference? Have an extra bedroom? Host a visiting student!
In January, the College of Veterinary Medicine is expecting three students from Brazil as part of the FIPSE (Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education) program, an exchange program through which the College sends three students to Brazil each summer. The Brazilian students will spend spring semester participating in research at the College.
The College is seeking housing (rooms at a moderate price) for these students for spring semester. The host families from previous years say that this was a great experience for them, as did CVM students who stayed in Brazil this past summer. If you are interested or know of any housing possibilities, contact Bert Stromberg at 625-7008 or b-stro@umn.edu by October 29.
Library sponsors 'LSI: Library Scene Investigation' online contest
As part of the Veterinary Medical Library open house planned for October 30 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., the library invites you to investigate the evidence by participating in the LSI: Library Scene Investigation online contest. By doing so, you'll be entered in a special grand prize drawing.
A new contest will be posted each week during the rest of October, which is National Medical Librarians Month. The more you participate in the contest, the more times you'll be entered in the grand prize drawing. The LSI: Library Scene Investigation online contest is only for current University of Minnesota students, staff and faculty. To take part in the online contest, go to http://www.vetmed.lib.umn.edu/node/1150
New veterinary journal launched
A new veterinary journal, The Open Veterinary Science Journal, has been launched. The peer-reviewed, online, open-access journal will publish three types of peer-reviewed articles: research articles, reviews, and short communications/letters.
The journal aims to provide the most complete and reliable source of information on current developments in the field. The emphasis will be on publishing quality articles rapidly and openly available to researchers. Published articles will be deposited immediately upon publication in at least one widely and internationally recognized open access repository (such as PubMed Central). Check out the new journal at www.bentham.org/open/tovsj/index.htm
Bringing research to market will be topic of Nov. 2 seminar
"From Lab to Market: The Challenges of Bringing Research to the Public through Technology Commercialization" will be the topic of a November 2 professional development seminar to be held from noon-1 p.m. in 280 Veterinary Diagnosic Laboratory. David L. Provence, Ph.D, patent attorney with Mueting, Raasch & Gebhardt, PA, will discuss the controversies and challenges of commercializing university research, including --
- How can researchers best protect their ideas?
- What is our experience in patenting and commercializing inventions relating to isolates, mutants, cell lines, peptides, and the like?
- What is the controversy around patenting genes?
- What patent possibilities and challenges lie ahead in a future of genetic engineering and individualized medicine for animals and humans?
David Provence is a patent attorney practicing in the area of biotechnology, including protein expression and nucleic acid synthesis, agricultural biotechnology, transgenic plants, genetics, structural and functional genomic analysis, microbiology, and general biology. He earned his PhD. in microbiology from Washington University and worked as a post-doctoral research associate in a laboratory at the Washington University School of Medicine before attending law school and earning a J.D. degree from the William Mitchell College of Law.
